My husband and I are looking for a property in either La Mata or Aguas Nuevas and would like some advice on what there is to do in these areas. Initially it will be used  as a holiday home with a view to longer stays once we retire (we are 62). We like to walk, shop and go out to eat and drink but don't want bars that always have sport on the TV.

What is La Mata like out of season? Is it safe to walk home at night? Are there many shops in La Mata?

If you can offer any advice at all it would be much appreciated.

Many thanks !

Hi, I can't answer your questions, but Ive inherited a 2bed apartment in Cabo Cevera in the Mirimar complex, very close to La Mata. Its just been refurbished. I'm putting it on the market if you want to look. Thanks

Hi we bought an apartment in La Mata last year and were out several times over the winter to get it sorted. The one thing we both felt was how safe it was to walk about at night, even along empty streets. At no stage did we feel threatened or anxious. It was quiet in the winter but still some bars and places to eat were open and during the day you could sit out for drinks or lunch without a coat. April and May were warm and more people about and more places to eat were open. We love the relaxed Spanish feel of La Mata at any time of the year, people are friendly and a lot do speak English. There are not a lot of shops in La Mata but on a daily basis you can buy whatever you need. Great supermarket, beautiful bakeries, several pharmacies plus the Chinese shop sells everything from sunhats to salt shakers! The Sea view restaurant on the beach front serves fantastic International food, staff are lovely and it's open all year round. Good luck with your search.
