Hi,

I´m looking to move from Alicante to Santa Pola and want to know the real pro´s and con´s for doing so.

I have two properties in mind: calle mediodia o calle francisco martinez.

Which location is more suitable year-round for commuting to Alicante by car, which area is more secure, which area is better year-round for parking two cars, which area is best for a couple in their forties to meet and socialize etc

Hello

I live in Gran Alacant but know Santa Pola fairly well.

Calle Mediodia is near the school zone, just on the outskirts of Santa Pola.  This means it is very easy to access the main road to Alicante. I would imagine parking would be easier as it is just less crammed in this area.  You are still only a 10 minute walk to town centre eg castle, glorieta square . Maybe 15-20 minute walk to marina .

Calle francisco Martinez is nearer the beach and I would imagine the parking would be much tighter. In the summer it is extremely busy.  If you plump for this area, look for a house with guaranteed parking place ( at least for 1 car) . Outside of the summer season it shouldn't be a problem. You are more in the ' holiday home' area here so apartments can be very expensive.

Security: Santa Pola is not a high crime area. I think most crime is opportunistic eg occasionally hear of people getting garden furniture/ plants stolen from the garden. In the school area, people live there all year round. I think you might get more space for your money as well in this area as it is not seen as the 'holiday home ' area.

Socialising: if you don't speak Spanish....learn ! Even a little goes a long way. We go to Spanish class at the civic centre ( near Francisco Martinez) and language exchange meets in local bar . Many Spanish people in Santa Pola are desperate to improve their English . It's a good way to meet people of different nationalities .  There is live music in St James bar at the marina .

Hope this gives you a flavour ?  Just give me shout if you want any further information....I'll try my best!

Best wishes

Anne

Hello Anne, I have just read your reply, I too am looking to buy a holiday home and this area attracts me. I am researching now  and any information you could give me would be greatly appreciated.

I am going to La Marina for 10 days in January to have a look and look at locations nearby.  I would need  regular transport as for the foreseeable future I would  not have a car. I would like to spend the winter months in Spain and in the summer my children and their family could use the house. My son likes golf, im not sure if there are golf courses around. We all love the beach.

Thank you for the previous information that you posted.

Colette

Hello anniearth

I still check the forum regularly and still have a place in gran Alacant . Unfortunately, due to brexit and 90/180 day regulations I can’t be in my place in the sun as often as I would like.  If you are relocating from the Uk then you should familiarise yourself with the regulations.  It’s pretty tough to gain residentia now if you cannot conform to the financial and health requirements.  As Ireland is still in the EU, it is easier.
In answer to your original request for information about Santa Pola, allow me to make some comment.

Yes.....you would be safe and welcome BUT you’ll not hear much English being spoken.  It’s difficult to break into the Spanish social circle although possible through friendly neighbours, local cafes etc .  I would recommend going to Spanish class at the Centro Civico ; this is a great way to meet people.  When I did this, there were around 15 nationalities in our class of 25!

When you mention that you preferred Benidorm to Alicante city, that makes me wonder if Santa Pola is the best option for you.

Kind regards

Anne
