Hello,

My wife and I retire this time next year from the NHS and we are considering medium to long term rental in Villamartin from 2022 Initially for 3 to 6 months around September to February or October to March every year after retirement. We would like to rent either a 2 bedrooms apartment or house preferably ground floor (no high rise) would consider second or third floor apartment, pool not a necessity as we are beach lovers. We would ideally like to be within 10 / 15 mins walking distance of the main centre and beach and close to amenities like supermarket / local shops etc.

Any advice or recommendations regarding our plans will be gratefully received.

Regards and thanks

Edd

Hi Edd and welcome to the forum,

First question: are you British or Irish?  If British (and no family link that enables you to obtain an Irish passport), you can only spend 90 days in 180 rolling days in the Schengen travel zone.  If you intend to stay longer than 90 days, you have to apply for residency.  If you have Irish passports, you can ignore the foregoing, as you´re still members of the EU.

Regarding your preferred location of VillaMartin, that would not be a 10/15 minutes walk to the beach, although there are other locations along Orihuela Costa which would fit that criteria, such as Cabo Roig, La Zenia, Playa Flamenca and Punta Prima.  If you can give some insight into why you´re looking at Villamartin, it may be helpful for members to offer further advice.

Kind regards,

Kim

Hi Kim,

Many thanks for your information. We are British passports holders I used 10/15 mins walking only as a guide so don’t mind less. We chose Villamartin after watching a place in the sun never been there but looks an ideal location which fits our personal preferences, we plan to book a holiday in Villamartin next year just to familiarise ourselves with the area. We have also considered Benidorm as we have visited twice and know the area but Villamartin seems to tick more of our boxes.

Forgot the 90 day rule so it would have to be 3 months which would probably be September to November and come home for Christmas with the family or January to March and come home and go to Corfu for 7-10 in the June.

Thank you

Edd

Edd, the walk to the beach from Villamartin is more like 50-70 minutes so it may not be the ideal location for you. As Kim pointed out, Playa Flamenca or Punta Prima may be a better choice.

Hi Edd,

You could do January to March (maximum 90 days) in Spain, but you wouldn´t be able to do Corfu in June, as you´d need to be back in the UK for a further 90 days before you could enter Schengen again, so that would be July, rather than June.

You may find it helpful to play around with a Schengen calculator to check that you don´t exceed the rules:

Kind regards,

Kim

Hi,

If you have any type of mobility problems then Villamartin is not the best location as 90% of the estate is built on hills. My sister has lived there for around 20 years and now in her later years finds it difficult to walk any distance. There is no bus service through the estates other than the main road through. You will need transport to get to any beach areas as its virtually impossible to walk the distance.

Benidorm is mainly on the flat and much more lively and social.
