Hi

I’m currently in Mojácar but looking at relocating to GDS.

Can I have opinions/tips on a mature single lady moving up there....

I would like to volunteer in a dog rescue centre/charity shop... not looking for bars and clubs but love walking, art, dancing and hoping to make new friends.

Many thanks

Guardamar is a lovely little town with everything you need close at hand. Not a lot of social life at the moment but pre- Covid there were loads of clubs, classes etc. I'd recommend looking at the town itself rather than the urbs which are more isolated, especially if you want to mix with Spanish as well as other nationalities. We've lived in town for 5 years now and have always felt safe and welcome. Be aware you'll need parking in the summer when most of Madrid relocates here to their holiday homes.

Hi Maz,

Myself and my friend Debbie, are moving to GDS in Dec. We're both mature ladies.  Make contact If you definitely decide to move to the area and we could all meet up for a coffee and explore interests in common. Tricia

Hi Kay

Thanks for your reply. I’ll certainly look at the town as I’d like to mix with Spanish people too but I would also like to have a property with a garden so are there any areas with easy access to amenities?

I’ve only been in Mojacar for a few weeks but I understand it has parking issues in the summer too. Do I definitely need a car or is there good public transport?

Morning Tricia

Thank you for your reply. It would be lovely to meet up if I decide that’s the place for me.

Can I ask what made you and your friend choose to settle in GDS and any other information/advice would be greatly appreciated.

Hi Maz,

We've stayed in GDS and it's a great mix of spanish & ex pats. The beach is lovely, the people we met we're friendly & helpful. It's a great location within easy commute of the airport, the larger town of Torreveija. It's also near to Santa Pola, La Mata and other really nice places.

We think it's a great location.

Public transport does exist but it's not frequent and tends not to run during Siesta. You are unlikely to find a house and garden in town but you loose lots of other advantages if you choose an urbanization or a finca and will be further from the sea. My best advice is to try a short rental first and give yourself time to get a real feeling for the sort of area you want to end up in longer term. We found our nice little garden became far too much work (everything grows like mad here!). We thought we'd not be happy in an apartment but found we love it and have a nice big balcony for plants and to sit out on. You may find exactly what suits you but only after trying a few different options

Hope it all works out well.

Kay

Hi Maz66, My wife Joan & I retired to Guardamar del Segura 16 years ago & we think we made the correct decision. I agree with all of the replies that I have read above. We do have a car but walk nearly everywhere around town. We do not need a car and our bus service is good, in my opinion. Many apartment blocks have basement under-parking which feels a bit spooky at first, but Guardamar is a very safe and friendly area.

I would advise you that most of the older 5 story high buildings do not have a lift. A lift is desirable when returning with a load of shopping. In our experience the lifts are very reliable and are serviced routinely and any call-out is prompt. We are on a third floor southwest corner with a glazed balcony along the south side, and we open windows all day if we wish the lovely cool sea breeze to waft through. Many plants suffer from excessive heat, therefore its difficult to do British style gardening but there is a good selection of heat & drought tolerant plants that survive on balconies.

Before you get too interested in a particular apartment, take a good look at the state of the road, pavement and outside of the building as Guardamar has ongoing maintenance except for August when all dirty work ceases. This is less of a problem away from the seafront promenade.

There are two dog exercise enclosures which become a social meeting spot under the shade of the pine trees. You may sense that I could continue, but if you have more questions I will be happy to add to the above. I hope that this is helpful, Peter132
