Hi my wife and I are moving out via NLV route April /May this year. We are in process of buying a house on los lomas area albatera where we have several friends living.
Our 19 yr old daughter is undecided as to whether to make the move with us, even for a year or two, as her initial impression is that the area is not really one for her to live in as too quiet and remote. Are there any late teens who have made the move and willing to meet up for a chat about living there? We are travelling out again for a week starting 19th Feb.

Thank you, Justin Gale

Hi Justin, we live in Las Lomas but we live the Fortuna side of the CV873 Frailes road and I'm guessing you will be buying the Crevillente side which is more built up and International.
As it stands, your UK driving licences are only valid for 6 months after you gain the TIE and getting a Spanish one involves taking both a theory and full practical test, in Spanish. We are expecting an announcement towards the end of this month and we are all hoping that an agreement can be reached whereby a relatively straightforward exchange can take place as it was pre Brexit.
Do your friends have family the same age? If they don't, you need to take that as a sign that not many other ex-pat families will.
If she doesn't speak Spanish what will she do for work, or maybe you will be supporting her?
Albatera does have an ex-pat population but mainly retirees. It is a typical Spanish town built mainly from agriculture and anyone your daughter's age will either be working or at college most of the day and they will probably have been here for some years and speak fluent Spanish.
I think she will be bored and lonely at a time when she should be out and about enjoying herself. Personal opinion only, of course.

Thank you, very informative and somewhat reinforces what I’m feeling.

On previous visits she has met a young lady same age , but she has since returned to live in uk for those very reasons. It may be she may come just for a year or so until she is more skilled in self sufficiency. All our friends are our age (60) or older and all their children live in uk.

I am aware of the driving licence issue having spoken to HM gov staff at road shows in uk. The lady ‘in the know’ at foreign office told me ,off the record but very firmly, that we would not be in a position whereby we would have to take a Spanish driving test as agreement will be reached. Not least because the Spanish living in uk can just exchange licences post brexit without a test.

Thanks again,

Justin

We have been waiting since 31st December 2020 for agreements to be reached. No doubt Gibraltar will crop up in negotiations!

Spanish citizens can stay in the UK for 6 months without a visa but UK subjects can only stay in Spain for 3 months, not everything will be quid pro quo.

All those in the same situation are hoping for a positive outcome.

Hello, we have been living nearby (Bridge 8, Partida Barrosa) since mid-2020. Our daughter is 18 and is doing an apprenticeship in Elche. We are from Germany, our daughter speaks fluent English.

Hi and thank you so much for replying . Very interesting about the apprenticeship as well.

Would there be any chance of meeting up over a coffee one day where Chloe could have a talk with your daughter ? Happy evening or day time. Fully understand if not.

We arrive evening Saturday 12th Feb and return afternoon of 19th.

Thank you in anticipation😀

Justin

Yes, no problem. Send me a PM with your phone number when you get here and I'll pass it on to my daughter so she can get in touch.
