Hello everyone, I have a quince tree in my orchard which is going to waste at the moment and wondered if anyone would like the fruit when Autumn comes. We are a bit out of the way so would be happy to meet up to drop them off, free of charge.

I agree with Villas. I wouldn't waste quinces. They do take a long time to cook down but I think it's worth it.

You can do them the English way and make a spreadable jam, or you can cook them a bit longer as the Spanish do to make a solid jelly. You can then slice it and serve it with cheese. I've still got a bit left that a Spanish friend gave me, and I've been scoffing it with cheese and with rice pudding.

Jim and Villas, thanks but I've done the jam, stewed it down etc, we just don't really like it very much which is why I'm trying to find someone who does as such a shame to waste it.

Thanks Cheryl. If I didn't have a free local supply, plus a Spanish friend who saves me the hassle of cooking, I'd take you up on the offer. Hopefully someone else will.

One of the things I like about it is that the Spanish friend gives me membrillo that isn't as sweet as jam. That makes me feel less guilty, as a diabetic, when I eat it.

I agree. It´s a shame. Quince, Figs, apricots (there´s only too much!). Pickle in it (with brandy) A pan de quince dias, hambre de tres semanas.

Or the mediaeval English type of fruit ‘cheese’ - imagine the result would be similar to membrillo. However, technically ‘cheeses’ were made from the waste fruit etc after making fruit jelly.

I used to have several damson trees - the resultant jam/jelly/cheese was distributed amongst all my friends and neighbours- who were very polite about it! - until the sheer volume began to make it unaffordable as a pastime. then I filled the freezer with them until my nearest and dearest started to assume a hunted expression when they saw the pie dishes a[proaching!!!!!!
