Hi Kim

I can't answer your actual question. But....

I also take blood thinners/anticoagulant - but my doctor prescribed a pill called Eliquis instead of warfarin. I simply take 2 a day - no need for blood tests.

I mentioned this to somebody else on this forum who then spoke to their doctor - who changed the prescription immediately! The doctor apparently said something about "new fangled pills" - it was only inertia that had prevented the change!

I suggest you try the same!

Cheers

Steve

Hello Kim

Are you resident with a SIP health card?   I take the spanish equivolent of Warfarin (Sintrom) & have regular 4week appts at the local salud  ( always at 8am )to check my Sintrom levels. This is passed to Torrevieja Hospital who fax back details , within the hour, of how many tablets I will need for the next month.

If you don't have a SIP card I would go into your nearest salud & ask what procedure they suggest - take all your papaerwork, cards etc with you relating to your medication.

I tried to change to Eliquis but was told by my Dr it wasnt suitable for me! Maybe I should  ask again...

Cheers

I too take a new version anticoagulant Rivaroxaban that my Doctor recommended I take, as we usually stay in Spain for the 90 days and I was paying my local pharmacy to do the INR tests. It has been a welcome change as no further blood tests, which were monthly and I take 1 tablet daily. In 2020 March we went over to Spain with all our medications for 3 months but as we couldn't get back in June had to buy further supplies at pharmacy. While most were reasonably cheap the price for 1month of Rivaroxaban was an eye-watering €73. I did a bit of research and yes the newer anticoagulants are very very expensive. In US over $100 a month. I suggest this is why doctors are reserved in their recommendations. It is true the newer ones have a drawback in they work by stopping the blood clotting completely whilst warfarin slows down the clotting time and changes hence the need for checking. Warfarin in Spain is so cheap approx €10 for 100 tablets and available freely at pharmacies.

Regards

Pauline

Yes, I was quoted 86€ in Playa Flamenca for one month supply of Eliquis, I believe its expensive because the patent doesn't allow generic versions, this will change in the future.
