Hi we are applying for a non lucrative visa and initially need to take out private health insurance. My understanding is that after being a resident on the padron for 12 months we can pay a small monthly fee and utilise the Spanish health system (convenio especial) in which case we would cancel the expensive health insurance . I’m assuming this would then not affect our NLV renewals even though we would be effectively benefitting from the Spanish welfare system?

Does anyone have the knowledge as to what the answer is?

The Convenio especial does indeed give you full access to the excellent Spanish Healthcare services. However is is not particularly a small monthly fee.

If you are under 65 I think the monthly fee is around €60 and for over 65's the cost shoots up to around €157 per month.

You may also have to pay all or a percentage of the prescription costs.

Thanks for your reply Steve, you are right about the monthly fee but it is still a lot less than insurance and includes pre existing conditions (unlike insurance). We are 60 so by time we are 65 should obtain permanent residency status and access to there health care system then 🤞🏻. Just wondered if it affects NLV renewal though.

From what I understand it will not affect NLV renewal.

At retirement age you will still (for now) be able to apply for healthcare via the UK S1 healthcare cover which still allows you to have access to the Spanish Healthcare services but paid for by the UK government.
