This explains fully regarding needing a Padron issued within the last 3 months for certain things but only needing to actually renew it if you move or after 5 years.

https://advisorscostablanca.com/how-to-get-a-padron/

As there is a financial gain for the municipallity, it seems some areas with high numbers of holiday home owners break the rules.

Regarding the 3 months situation, this is not actually renewing the Padron it is just getting a new piece of paper.   The Padron is only renewed for non-EU residents every 2 years, I believe.   Before the end of 2020, i.e. when the UK was still technically a member of the European Union, Padrons were renewed every 5 years and the town hall should contact the holder to advise them that it was due for renewal.

If you are not a legal resident in Spain (EU resident ) you shouldn't be on the Padron at all.

I agree with everything you say however it's all too frequently undermined by official bodies demanding padrons from people who have no legitimate right to be holding one.

In addition to better oversight one possible solution to the problem would be to hold those actually issuing padrons to non entitled persons personally responsible for their illegal acts.

Hi,.

We are arriving on the 6th November on a NLV and want clarification of the Padron rules..  we will be staying in temporary rented accommodation for around 4 months in the San Fulgencio area. then moving to permanent accommodation..do we need to register for a Padron to attain our TIE for our temporary rented accommodation?..

So confusing

We needed a padron to get our TIE cards, SIP cards, Driving licences and to change the car registration.

Yes and it gives Expats the wrong information. Non residents shouldn't be on the padron and you shouldn't need a padron to buy a car but try telling that to someone who has a holiday home in Quesada !

Hi Eileen,

You may know that Ciudad Quesada comes under Rojales town hall - one of the worst offenders for actively encouraging non-residents to register on the Padrón.  Unfortunately, it's the individual, not the town hall, that will be fined for illegally registering.  As Darro has suggested, if the town hall was sanctioned as well, it may help.

Kind regards,

Kim

Hi jogary,

You will need a temporary Padrón to support your application for a TIE.  When you arrive, take your passport, NLV and rental contract to San Fulgencio Town Hall (Ayuntamiento) and explain that you need the Padrón for your TIE application.  Once you've obtained your TIE and assuming your permanent home is also in the San Fulgencio area, return to the Town Hall to register your TIE with them.  If your permanent home comes under a different Town Hall, you'll need to de-register at San Fulgencio and register instead with the Town Hall for your new location.

Kind regards,

Kim

I'm pretty sure that our padrons were free when we first got them. We've had to pay something like a euro each when we needed copies. That's for Aigues.

Free here too MFB per Eileen's experience. Inland of Alicante. Does need refresh every 3 months IF NEEDED here (e.g. SIPs / jabs and TIE back then) Which was essential at that time. Just for a washing machine since ;-)

We no longer carry it around in 'the ID pack' as the number is on the TIE card.

Best wishes,

D&J

Hi Jogary - there are a couple of other things that you may need per Kim's list (if we are now talking TIE, not Padron) - a Spanish bank account (no idea what is the recommended amount now to prove financial stability - NLV may / should cover that), ours was prior. Padron for sure. Health insurance - only needed until you hit the magic retirement age and the commensurate systems work together (yet to experience that). We took deeds (if renting, forget that). Used for temp SIP the determination to have everyone double-jabbed.

Not heard of needing driving or car details needs for Padron at time of TIE...Maybe it has changed. That was needed for our transfer of car via DGT and Psido-Physica licence tests later. Not hard, in fact quite fun ;-)

Good luck! It is worth it...albeit I expect 90% of people here will do a double think re the paperwork needed!

Yes I do understand this. You still have to go down to the town hall to get a version of the padron every 3 months if you are using the padron as ID for Residency, Driving licences and SIPS. They will not accept a padron with a date longer than 3 months. " Renew" might be the wrong term but you do have to get a new version. Just Google " how long does a padron last for ID purposes in Spain ". It comes back as 3 months.

Wrong! If you are on the Padron you are signing to say this is your main residence. If you drive down with your GB plate car and get stopped you will be in trouble as you will be down as a resident here driving a foreign plated car. Stating this is your main residence also means you should be paying tax to the Spanish tax man.

This is one article, just google "Should I be on the Padron if I am not resident in Spain?"
