Hi Carol99,

This link may be helpful - scroll down to "Switching bank accounts":

https://europa.eu/youreurope/citizens/consumers/financial-products-and-services/bank-accounts-eu/index_en.htm

As your new bank is responsible for ensuring that regular payments, e.g. Direct Debits and Standing Orders, are transferred, it would probably make sense to choose a new bank with English speaking staff.

In the meantime, I wouldn't close your existing account, especially as you say you have DDs set up on it.  If Bankia is frustrating your ability to transfer funds to your account, they need to take responsibility for that.  I'd send them an email, so that you have your complaint in writing and an audit trail that proves you have been trying to resolve the matter:

https://www.bankia.es/en/retail-banking/atencion-client/servicio-atencion-cliente

Good luck!

Kind regards,

Kim

I haven't had to close a bank account - I'm with Sabadell and find them the best of a not great Spanish bunch.

The article for which I sent you the link suggests you may be charged for closing an account, but as it sounds like you have an extensive audit trail of your attempts to resolve the issue, I'd be telling Bankia to take a hike if they tried to charge you.

Good luck!

I was with BMN when they changed to Bankia in March, but it didn't cause me a problem. I went into the new Bankia in Catral, even though my branch was Almoradí, and they opened a new Bankia account for me on the spot. Obviously the new Bankia account has a different IBAN but all my domiciliarios transferred seamlessly. The only thing I had to do was update my BIC with my pension provider as they use the BIC for some reason. My old BMN debit card still works with Bankia.

Last week when I went into the local branch they suggested that, as I lived locally, it would make sense to transfer my account from Almoradí to Catral, which they did there and then.

I have to say I haven't had any problems with using Bankia and still get commission free banking by having my pension paid directly.

Being able to speak Spanish does help obviously as it's unreasonable to expect branch staff to speak any European language thrown at them. Having said that, there is usually someone who speaks a smattering of English. Try going into Lloyds in any high street in the UK and expect them to speak in Spanish or Italian!

Yes totally agree with language.most of them do speak some English where as I speak no Spanish...its the access and transfer numbers they gave us to log in that isnt working.Im getting worried as I need to send funds for direct debits...we were over in June but forgot our bank book so couldnt put money in.
