I have a green paper residencia & I know it is not at present necessary to exchange it for a TIE.However it is said that at some date we ALL will need to do so.I am concerned as I am hoping to sell my apartment soon & ,if I apply now,I shall have to give up my original green paper & await the arrival of the TIE,thereby having no original of proof of residency during that period. That may not be acceptable at the Notario when completion takes place. Also we all have to attend an office in Alicante which for many of us is not near where we live & have to repeat the process for the new card once it is ready.I have spoken to a British Solicitor & also 2 offices that are doing the applications as I am wondering if,after December,we shall be able to go to a local unit as we did to get our original all those years ago.No one seems to know, even it seems the British Consulate.Discussions are "ongoing"!  I was also told that no new appointments are being issued from the end of November.Perhaps it is to simply to catch up with the backlog as I know there was a big demand & Alicante is a big province. Can anyone on here add any comments please?

My advice would be relax and sit tight. Your Residencia certificate remains completely valid after 31.12.20. There has been no announcement about any plans to require existing Residencia holders to swap.

Kind regards, Steve

If you decide to exchange you do not surrender your green card until you collect the TIE.

Adrian.

I will have to check again about that Adrian as I was told it was taken,so many thanks for your info.Actually it doesn´t make much sense to leave you with just a note to say you have applied.

Certainly when you apply to change from a UK to a Spanish driving license they take your UK one away and give you a certificate which allows you to drive and confirms your licence is at Trafico. Don't know whether they do the same with Residencia applications though.

When you make the formal application and are fingerprinted they return the Residencia card to you and issue you with a form containing the application details. You take both plus your passport on day of collection. You are re fingerprinted the form and old Residencia are retained on issue of the TIE. I would advise to make a copy of old Residencia as this contains the date you were first granted the status.

Regards,

Adrian.

Adrian is correct. You only surrender your green card when you collect your TIE. Just been through the process ourselves.

Hi

Your existing green card will be returned to you once they take your details for the TIE card, as it happened when we applied In Alicante

A word of advice tho, when your TIE card is ready for collection which is a different office in Alicante check the details

They have issued incorrect cards to many for example validity should be 10 years and on the back it should not say dependent of an EU resident

This has been picked up by many after they collected their cards and the Spanish Authorities have indicated that they are working to correct the mistakes and will inform the people with incorrect card what to do to exchange to correct ones

So if this maybe the case return your card and show the person dealing the incorrect data they will take your card back and tell you when to come to pick s correct one

Don’t you love Spain!!!

Thanks All.I think I will hang on a bit longer before I apply again. There are so many u-turns both by the British & Spanish authorities, who knows.I don´t want to have to have a wrestling match & refuse to hand over my green document if suddenly rules change.Just hope I can get my potential buyer to complete before end of year.

I'm holding off on exchange until the teething problems with card info are resolved and hopefully the system, once smoothed out and proved in Alicante, may be rolled out to the Policia Nacional in other towns.

Meantime, at the risk of repeating myself, there is no requirement to swap as the old Residencia remains valid after 31.12.20
