Hi Everyone

I’m thinking ahead to when we may possibly move to Spain full time, in particular I’m worried about bringing out our dog Molly, a three year old cockapoo . She’s a very adaptable calm dog, and I would of course thoroughly research entry requirements and also the best way to get her over here. I’m mainly concerned with how she would cope with the different climate ()I would clip her short in the warmer months) but also how the walks, a big part of our current routine would work. I’m supposing that during the heat of summer it would be a very early walk and a late one. I do see many dogs around during the day and often feel they look uncomfortable. I would really miss our afternoon walks and this is a big part of my life with her.

Any suggestions or shared experiences would be appreciated.

Thanks

Julie

Lots of people out here have dogs, get a Spanish passport for her the next time you bring her out. It’s so much cheaper and easier when crossing from UK.We used Vetapet at Quesada.Very nice and helpful

Hello,

I understand your concern,

I have travelled with my small dog Tina last month to Torrevieja, unfortunately I couldn't find easier way than travelling to Holland with the ferry and from Holland with airplane to Alicante.

I can insure you, your dog will love it, Tina is enjoying her life much more than London, of course you need to avoid the mid day heat thats all.

all the best

That’s good to hear. We live in a small village and there are lots of walks nearby, I know it will be different over in Spain but good to hear that Tina is happy. I know some airlines fly dogs in the cabin, I dont fancy putting her in the hold and she hates the car so driving may not be an option either . All academic at the moment and any move is a way off but her welfare is very important to us hence the post.

Thank you for the replies

Julie

Hi Julie,

The key to walking your dog during a Spanish summer is to kick off your flip-flops and stand barefoot on the pavement - if it's too hot for your feet, it's too hot for your woof's paws.  Tarmac roads will be even hotter.

At the moment, I do a long walk with our woof around 7.30am and can still do shorter walks during the day, but as the days heat up during the summer, I don't walk him between 10am and 6pm.  I also bought him a cooling mat (available from Spanish pet stores, such as Tiendanimal, and also Amazon), because he refuses to sit in a paddling pool 😄

Kind regards,

Kim

Hi Kim

Thank you for your reply.  I already have a cooling mat for the few days a year it is really hot in the UK, but getting her to sit on it is a problem! Maybe out here she would appreciate one more. I realise that the hot pavements are probably more of an issue that the actual heat of the day, I suppose it’s just a case of changing our current routine to suit the climate which I suppose everyone has to do, with or without a dog.

Actually I think I would miss the seasons in the uk, nothing like getting all wrapped up for a bracing wet weather walk and getting all dry and cosy when you get home.

Lots to think about but something we hope to do sometime in the next few years.

Regards

Julie
