When an apartment is left empty what are the charges for water and electric, do they have standing charges like the UK or is it just pay as you go?

You'll pay a standing charge for electricity every month even if its turned off at the fuse box. We're paying around €15 - €16 a month when we're not there.
You water bill is probably quarterly and is the same. We're paying about €70 per quarter for this with no usage. Bear in mind your water bill may include a charge for sewage and refuse collection too.

Thank you so much, this is very helpful. Do you know about internet, how much per month and can you have it turned off when not there and if so is there a reconnection charge? I am just trying to get a monthly costing of owning an apartment over there?

We pay €25 per month for broadband. You can switch it off for up to 3 months of the year saving €75.
Have you already bought somewhere?

No not yet, just looking into on going costs per month as it would only ever be a bolt hole. Is that all covered do you think? Water, electric and internet, council tax and maintenance charge. Thanks once again.

I'll pm you some info later today, that'll give you an idea of monthly costs. Someone did that for us and it was really helpful.
A lot of people think there's no costs when your not there which is sadly not true. Your'e doing things the right way round👍

Thank you, I don't want it turning out to be an expensive folly.
Hi - I have a small 2 bedroom apartment (holiday home) in Algorfa - when I'm not there, I pay around €24 per month electricity (iberdrola) & around €27 quarterly for water (hydraqua). My WiFi is pay as you go with vegafibra so I pay a daily rate when I'm there but no charge when I'm not. You also need to factor in twice yearly bins charge (collected by SUMA - we pay about €27 each time) plus annual IBI (sometimes referred to as SUMA) which is dependent on the value of your property - ours is about €187 annually). You also have to complete an annual tax return & pay an annual non-residents tax (varies depending on who does your return or if you do it yourself). Then you have annual communal fees depending on where you buy and you will need buildings & contents insurance. Some/most Spanish banks also charge a quarterly fee for your non resident bank account - ours is €35 per quarter with Sabadell. We transfer a set amount each month from our UK to our Spanish bank account via Currencies Direct and then all our bills go out of our Spanish account by direct debit. In total, I would say our fees add up to around €1800 - €2000 per annum but that includes the increase in utilities and WiFi charges when we're actually there. Hope that helps 🙂
