This post is so that people can make an informed decision if they are considering the Doyouspain and Goldcar combination, ie using DoyouSpain as a comparison website and then selecting Goldcar because it may appear to be one of the cheapest. While they are pretty much covered by their small print, it might be thought that a comparison website should factor in the extra costs when giving the upfront price for comparison with other car hire companies.

Sorry. This website appears unable to render a table. Please see

table

Obviously August is when the car hire companies need to make most of their money. Goldcar tried to upsell to us multi-driver use, insurance excess insurance and a bigger car. Of course it is only subjective but they appeared to become increasingly frustrated with us when we resisted these which would have added greatly to the costs in the table above.

They also said that one or more of the extra costs would have been avoided had we booked directly with them rather than through Doyouspain. I have no idea if that is true.

There is standard patter for all vehicle hire companies and I believe the hard sell is commission based also.

Just so I can understand you correctly, are you saying the table of charges is what you ACTUALLY had to pay?

I have used DYS many times and the price for the hire has always been the price I have paid. I hugely resisted the upsell on insurance and YES, they do say 'it would all have been avoided if you booked directly' but that is all just a game.

The ONLY extra I know of is the temporary blocking of about 1200€ on your credit card for them to be able to try and bleed you dry when you return the car with issues.

You should also note some of the charges will be incurred if you do NOT opt for the Full to Full option on the fuel... not only do they overcharge you per litre but they also charge you for taking the vehicle to the petrol station and topping it up.

In closing, IF you HAVE been charged what is in your table then I would go back to DYS and debate the points. They do speak English and I have found them to be very helpful

Hope it helps

Seems to be endemic when booking through comparison sites.

Had a similar experience myself recently.

Car Hire Fraud / Scams

Let's see if they live up to their price claim next time.

Thanks for your reply UKHandyMan4Hire. When you say "Just so I can understand you correctly, are you saying the table of charges is what you ACTUALLY had to pay?"  Yes, we had to pay

advance payment to DoYouSpain €274.96

total GoldCar charges inc vat made at airport on arrival  €88.89

and, after we dropped off the car (having been told on collection that we had paid for a full tank of fuel):

GoldCar charge for fuel on return of car  €70.00

And, yes, we did have a block of a thousand euros or similar on the credit card but that appears to have been unblocked without trace on the credit card bill.

Nigel - I would go back to DYS and take it up with them, the charges are simply outrageous!

I agree totally with UJHandyMan, as we do exactly the same as him - opt for full to full, have our own insurance and never go with suggested upgrade?

The price we pay to DYS is all we pay, though s fee of €1200 is available for deduction from my account if any “damage” is found on the car upon return

Why you have been charged an extra €88 by Goldcar is scandalous, you need to contact Goldcar rather than DYS as the payment was charged by them

Thanks to you both. I agree it seems outrageous. Before I act I will confirm with my partner who has the documentation that they are not actually covered in making these additional charges by the small print. I don't think the small print actually gives exact amounts but rather bands of extra costs. They could have covered themselves!

However it rather diminishes the benefit of a comparison website such as DYS if the upfront prices are only the beginning of your costs.

I will get back with the (small) details.

All relative and opinion based of course.....I’ve used Goldcar on multiple occasions and never had an issue with them
