HI

Am I right in thinking that to obtain a Spanish driving license from scratch even for an experienced driver of 45years you have to pay quite a large sum and join a driving school who arrange the theory test then the practical test?

You cant just go to DGT yourself to arrange the theory and when passed arrange the practical also yourself?

I also believe that the theory can be done in English but the practical only in Spanish?

I cannot simple exchange my old long expired license for a Spanish one due to technical reasons why I'm not going into here!

Regards

Gary

It is not necessary to go through a driving school first unless you wish to practice your driving skills.

You can request the written exam direct from DGT and you must request then to take it in English. If you don't you will automatically be given it in Spanish.

You then need the driving medical exam at a psicometric centre. This is valid for 90 days so try and arrange the actual driving test within that time.  You can request a practical driving test direct with any DGT office providing you can show your registration document (TIE) and the request for a test. You can pay at the office or download the payment form from the DGT website but must take the receipt with you.

If you do lessons through a driving school they will arrange it all for you including the written and practical tests, the medical and the collection of your license when it is all done. Simply sign the authorisation document to allow a representative to do it for you.

Try and contact a driving school and they will assess how many lessons they think you need, from other peoples' experiences they've said 5 to 10 lessons could be necessary.

Best of luck.

Thanks for the reply, very helpful!

Any idea how long after passing the theory you have to take the actual/practical test?

Cheers

Gary

This post that was quoted has been deleted.

Learn how not to be rude

FYI license is spelt correct in English US grammar

Licence is also correct, in English language UK

You have two years after passing your theory exam to pass your practical.

Marclif I had to pass my test here after 40 years driving due to Brexit. The theory in english is not easy as some of the translations dont make sense. Booking a few lessons through a school gave me access to multiple theory tests to practice. They also provide the spanish highway code book. I needed both as the rules here are different. My examiner was very good and kept the spanish directions very basic for me. The practicle test was with my instructor and the examiner in the back. It allows for the dual controls to be used if needed. Good luck it is worth doing rather than getting your old licence updated and exchanged.
