We are looking for a gardener or handyman wanting to avoid paying rent. In exchange for 2 hours of maintenance work a day on our land, we offer a small and quiet place to live on site *in need of some reforms* with beautiful views in Busot, Alicante, Spain. The work needed is general maintenance, clearance of weeds, growing vegetables, feeding and releasing/closing our chickens and ducks.
The person would need to have a small job to sustain himself.
Preferably English speaking.

Thank you

Denis

I'm not sure what you propose is legal because however minimal the terms and even with payment in kind (the accommodation) it's still employing somebody and you can't just do that and say nothing.

Insurance is the big thing, say your 'employee' had an accident you might find yourself being held liable for his care for however long that might prove necessary.

I'd certainly take professional advice before entering into such an arrangement.

You don't say if this would be while you lived there yourselves or in your absence, if the latter it could be fraught with problems.

The situation is open to abuse through subletting In which case you could have the devils own job getting them out.

If I were you I would speak to a solicitor who specialises in this type of contract and find out what the pitfalls would be.
