Hi.

I'm hoping to move to Spain with my family within the next 6 months or so, although we're not sure on location yet.

Once there I hope to get a job as a nanny or in a nursery. I'd like to open my own nursery in the future, however, I'm not sure what qualifications I need and what UK qualifications are recognised in Spain?

If anyone could help in any way, it would be much appreciated?

Thanks.

Jan

I would imagine that you would need to speak very good Spanish to open your own nursery.  Hopefully you do but If you didn't it could be a problem  - Not only for the Spanish  parents and children but when you need to speak to the authorities or make orders for the nursery and other things.

It's hard enough to open your own nursery in the UK with all the rules, regulations and health and safety, let alone in Spain but hopefully you will get some good advice on here.

Language will be a factor.

Expat areas are predominantly populated by the older generation, no small children. So banking on focusing on English speaking customers isn't really an option.

Moving into other areas your customer base will be Spanish, therefore you will be expected to converse with the parents and children in their national language.

Safeguarding laws will be quite strict as they always are with children. So you would be subject to all the necessary legal checks and associated form filling that Jan refers to.

To give you any chance learn  Spanish at a conversational level before you come out

I don't speak Spanish yet but I am learning. I'm aware I need to learn before opening a nursery. Luckily I pick up languages easily. I wouldn't be opening a nursery until much later in the future anyway.

I'm more concerned about what I need in order to just work in a nursery at the moment.

I currently work in a childcare setting here in the U.K and have several qualifications already and have had the nessasary checks here, i.e, DBS,Safeguarding, Food safety/health and hygiene in catering and more.

I'm really just asking what the requirements are in Spanish nurseries and what qualifications are recognised there? Does anybody know where I can get accurate information please?

The best way is to contact a few nurserys in the area you are thinking about. If your written Spanish isn't strong use something like Google translate.

All the standard childcare certs and checks you have be worthless in Spain for obvious reasons. For instance your DBS in only a UK check. But contacting a Spanish nursery will give you a heads up. I would imagine you will need exactly what you have already but in a Spanish format.

The key is Spanish language which you are on with so that will be really helpful

Good luck

I thought that would be the case. I'll contact some nurseries in the areas I'm thinking for moving to, like you suggested. Thank you for your help.
