Do you need to be a British pensioner to get free health care if you live in Spain as a resident or just receiving a works pension

I am on the understanding that to receive free health care you need to be a uk state pensioner and have a S1 to qualify, if you have a works pension and retired early you have to fund your own private Health Care here in Spain, if you become a resident.
That's correct, you need to be in receipt of a UK state pension which will get you the required S1 from DWP.
There are certain exportable UK benefits which can also qualify someone for an S1 but there is nothing in your question to suggest they might apply in your case..
