Hi,

Looking for suggestions for a suitable holiday destination for a group of friends in June.  Flying in to Alicante so anywhere either north or south of Alicante airport within an hour's drive either way would be good.  We are all over 65, so not looking for any wild active nightlife!  We would like someplace near the beach with nice walks and quirky shops, near public transport if possible as neither of us feels confident enough to drive in Spain. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Albir is less than an hour north of Alicante airport.  Very touristy but perfect for your age group as walk to beach, restaurants, bars, market, etc… Great circular bus service to and from Altea and Benidorm.

Have a look also at Villajoyosa, a few miles south of Benidorm. Less touristy than other places, on the TRAM line for day trips and plenty of local walks and bike rides.

Try https://www.happyvila.com/en/ for accommodation. The old town is lovely and maybe two or more small apartments may be better for older groups, rather than one big place.

Second this, Albir is lovely, flat or gentle slopes. Lovely promenade. I would go on holiday there myself, and I live in Santa Pola.

Wouldn't recommend Villajoyosa, as it's quite hilly.

Have a lovely time.

Cheers, J

The waterfront at Vilajoyosa is flat of course and much longer and more varied than Albir. There is a moving pavement to get you up to the shopping area and excellent town museum if you need it.  The TRAM line is quite a way from central Albir, so if you want to get around the area then Altea might be another place to look.  Getting to the famous old town here does require good legs though, or a taxi.

El Campello is a beautiful resort.

Or stay in the quieter Poniente Beach side of Benidorm. You got the benefit of all the daily coach trips then which will take you further afield to Guadalest or Altea, Calpe, Denia etc. From there you can also get public transport to visit Alicante

Good to get the info on Villajoyosa, do you know what the beach is like and if the sea is suitable for swimming in June around that whole area, Villajoyosa to Altea?  Many thanks

The main beach is great from now on, nearly all sand all along the waterfront and has some shade from palm trees at the river end. Quiet and secluded coves both ends if you don't mind a hilly walk or bike ride.  Torres beach at the far north end is unusual in that as there is lots of shade from big trees in the park behind the beach - ideal for a picnic. You would probably want to drive there, but can be reached by bike. Google Maps in satellite view and Street View is invaluable for exploring these places in advance.
