Do you have experience of teaching English and/or any qualifications? Also, I would presume a good knowledge of Spanish would be needed if you were to be teaching Spanish students?

If you have TEFL qualification it's not a necessity to speak the local language. However, in practical terms speaking Spanish is an advantage, as children/teenagers will delight in "pulling the wool over your eyes" In my experience as a teacher of ESOL😉

You know Mark Zuckerberg didn't get his degree until he was a billionaire to show that you don't need a degree to succeed.

But I have friends and family that have travelled the world and taught English without any qualifications at all and they only speak English (one speaks Greek aswel) so give it a try. I personally would call up the private schools and ask. Also when was the last time you applied for a job and the...

... company actually made the effort to varify your grades? You could always just say you're qualified and see how far you get

There was a time when just being white and able to use a photocopier was enough to get a job teaching English. Not anymore.

Do you need a degree to teach English in Alicante City? Or would being a native speaker suffice?

You will need a minimum CELTA / DELTA. Schools are pretty tight on that, as so they should be. You will probably need at least basic Spanish, too. But in Spain......and here's the kicker....the pay is lousy and I mean, lousy. In Germany, it is much higher.

The problem for qualified ESL teachers, is that for years the market has been flooded with 'TEFL tourists' - university grads doing "a bit of teaching" in their gap years. Consequently, it's a buyers market and pay has been squeezed for years as a result.

I am fortunate, in that I specialise in a very niche market where the remuneration is reflective of this. But if you DO specialise, then a degree in English or teaching is a prerequisite, along with the aforementioned CELTA / DELTA..

Yeah, absolutely lousy pay and often split shifts. And some of the most unpleasant people I've ever met were running language schools in Spain. Granted, a few years back, and in and around Madrid, but easy money it is not. Unless you own the school.

I was "lucky" in that I did some part-time teaching when not on international assignments. The owner was a gem. But.....the pay was no more than petrol money! That's the way it is.

Good luck! My experience (I have TEFL and have worked in schools) is that there is loads of competition and the jobs for the next year go quickly. Schools will already be recruiting for the autumn. Try sending your CV and covering letter now to the ones in Alicante and see how you get on........ ...

...and office staff in a lot of the private schools mainly speak Spanish, so unless you do, phoning will be a thankless task. And they'll only ask for your CV anyway.

I entirely agree with this. I TEFLed for years with International House. The idea that you should pretend you have a degree is immoral. You may not need a degree but you do need at least RSA Cert in TEFL.

Good luck.

Hi everyone,

Thank you for all your replies(especially as I was afraid that I wouldn't get any responses to my question in the first place!).

I guess the reason I asked in the first place was because I noticed a "We're Hiring" sign at a KFC in Torrevieja a couple of months ago. They had shut down because of the pandemic and were now preparing to re-open. The thing is, is that the sign was in English. I'm not even sure it was bi-lingual.

Teaching English in Spain seems to have its pros and cons(like everything else in life) and I guess what I want to ask now, to finish things off, is whether it's possible to get a job in Spain at Starbucks(or KFC) if you only speak English.

I think you'll find it tough. Sorry. Hope I'm wrong.
