Hi everyone. I'm about to start the planning and costing of moving the furniture of a 4 bed property over to Alicante way quite possibly the Hondon Valley. I'd love to hear you experiences and recommendations. Also white good are we better to leave them behind and buy Spanish ...like the unanimous vote I got for leaving all car's and bikes behind. So greatfully for your information and insight

We used Howells and Son and everything went smoothly and we took advantage of their free storage here for a couple of months. Be quite ruthless, especially with things like photo albums, get them all put on a disc and anything sentimental you may wish to pass on to family in the future, do it now instead. Do you really need all those books?

There is a big Ikea on the outskirts of Murcia and a lot of things might be cheaper to buy new rather than pay to bring over. Both Spanish and Ikea have different bed sizes than the UK...something to keep in mind for quilts, covers and fitted sheets but there are a few Yorkshire Linens shops about. Just remember that it is not worth buying goods in the UK and sending them over due to import taxes and although there is  Marks and Spencer's es online, the prices include those taxes

All you need to do with all your white goods is to change the plug. However, removal companies charge by volume so it may be worth contacting one or two companies to find out the charge. Then if any are still under warranty, they will no longer apply. We bought all new here.

You can buy many international brands here. Look on the websites for Carrefour es, Media markt es, Euronics es or Hnos Garcia to price up new. Some will deliver and install. If manuals only come in Spanish you can find the English version online.

We left all ours in UK, only bringing our Rangemaster oven with a conversion kit for bottled gas because we couldn't get like for like in Spain.

Our tvs were all out of warranty so we brought all those over and they are still working 8 years on so unless you always like all the newest gizmos, bring them with you.

I agree entirely, unless you have very high end expensive white goods, it is not worth shipping them. And even then, it could be problematic if you needed them repaired.,

Everything is available here, most of these companies are international, although many of them originate in Germany.. There are Spanish electrical manufacturers, a couple of which are subsidiaries of well known German brands.

We brought far too much over with us. Storage is generally at a premium in Spain with no attics etc although we have a utility shed where all our garden stuff and tools etc are stored.

Clothes, bedding and so on is a good idea if still in good condition. We did bring our bed with us but bought a new mattress for it here which are quite expensive considering. Plenty of places with good quality furniture that will probably fit in better with the homes here. The suite we brought with us was changed within the year as, nice though it was, didn't quite fit in that well. We brought our big TV with us but they, as well as most white goods, are no longer as expensive as they used to be

Lots of sales at the beginning of the year but stores generally have sales at many different times of the year.

Looking around now and the only furniture we still have that we brought with us are a couple of display units, the rest has been replaced by stuff bought here although that was over a few years plus the dining table although we have changed the chairs. We still have the bed (nice, oak one which fits in everywhere) but have changed the beds in the other two rooms. One oak blanket box and one oak set of drawers along with the bed are the only things left of what we brought with us.

For the cost of shipping, we could have replaced virtually everything. We didn't bring white goods with us and gifted them amongst our kids. Bargains can be found virtually everywhere and most places deliver either same day (if you order in the morning) or next day (if you order in the afternoon). Garcias, Don De, Euronics and Muebles de la Factoria being godsends.

Bring with you stuff that is expensive here but avoid stuff that won't actually fit in with either the space or the decor. For the kitchen we still have the same kettle as they were virtually impossible to get here but are now sold virtually everywhere. My coffee maker went the way of all things and has been replaced.

I do regret not bringing my books with me, though, and we gave them all to a charity in UK. My bookcase is now full of DVDs which are also becoming dinosaurs and I do miss the good collections we used to have in UK.

Hope you have a good move, the point I'm trying to make is that virtually everything is now available here in Spain, even bedding, that used to be rough sheets and bolster pillows, are being replaced by good quality items in places like JYSK, IKEA and Yorkshire Linen.

Something else to think about is that many properties here are sold furnished and if that turns out to be the case then take photos and get an agreed inventory. It is not unknown for some/all of the good stuff to be sold and replaced with rubbish.
