Hi

Looking for advise on taking a couple of sentimental pieces of furniture to our holiday apartment in Alicante.

All the advise available seems to be directed at people that are relocating and using removal companies.

We just want to use our own vehicle to take a rocking chair and a number of small paintings to our holiday home but cannot find any advise on what import duty (if any) would be due.

We would be travelling from Portsmouth to Bilboa not via France.

Thanks

Hi

We are in same position as yourself and have posted identical query myself since January. We had done 2 easy ferry trips with our own van prior to Brexit without any problems but since January like yourself have only read info for commercial hauliers and transfer of residence situations. We still have a lot of belongings to bring to Spain, don't want to pay haulier when we bought the van specifically for this purpose but taking to a 2nd home seems we will be charged 21%iva and import duties. I contacted several customs agents who all said we only deal with commercial companies. We are stuck so very interested to hear from others experiences now that some people are travelling with essential reasons. We have had our 2nd jabs just waiting to discover whether it would be financially viable to transport our belongings. Also interested in anyone transporting belongings by car, do you still have to complete customs declarations for smaller loads?

Regards

Pauline

Hello, I don't have any advice but you have brought this to my attention. We have bought a second home in Alicante City and was hoping to transport furniture over by ourselves. I hadn't considered import tax. I'll start asking around and if I get any answers, I will share on this chat.

Hope we all get some answers soon

Donna

These are EU rules, but may be applied differently by France and Spain, can anyone with information please specify which route you are using and what happened.

Hi Donna

I feel sure most people will be surprised at the changes due to leaving the EU and it seems you may not be affected if your move is going to be permanent as Reading your earlier post regarding employment then obviously you will be getting residency so with change of permanent residence you may bring your own belongings(not new items) and avoid the customs charges. However if permanency is off your radar then you need to do plenty of research. Even using a courier involves customs declarations and duties plus the iva charge. I know of one person's transport cost has gone from £2500 to just under £5000 inclusive. Hope you find out some info to share. Good luck with your soon to be next visit.

Regards

Pauline

Hi,sorry but I did not get any further with information. It all seems to conflict. Some say no problems just drive from Santander, customs will not be an issue. Others say that they had big problems at customs in France but then OK at French/Spanish border. All I could find out 'officially' was information regarding moving/relocating.

We therefor decided not to take the items.

We have also decided to rent out the apartment, which is in Alicante City, on a long term lease with Spanish tenants.

Sorry I cannot be of more help.

Regards

Phil

I have just coming back from taking various bits out to our holiday home in Spain by car, including a fold up bed. Travel Portsmouth to Santander.

There were no checks when we landed at Spain. I had itemised the stuff we had on board just in case and put values  against them to keep it under the import limit. There were two of us in the car.

The Spanish customs did check every car on the way back to UK though.
