Am returning to the UK and have been told that as I now hold a Spanish driving license and will be changing back to a British one, as I am 70, will have to take a driving test in the UK, any idea if this is true?

Utter nonsense, who comes up with this claptrap?

Provide there are no medical reasons to preclude you from driving, for which you may need to consult a UK doctor to certify you fit, you can simply apply to DVLA for a UK licence.

Hi Sue,

I cannot find anywhere that says you need to take a test when returning to the UK if you hold a valid EU driving licence. There is a requirement for everyone in the UK to renew their driving licence when they reach 70 and keep renewing it every 3 years thereafter,  so it could be that which is being confused with needing to take a test?

The link below takes you to the DVLA driving guide licence guide for visitors and those planning to reside in the UK.

https://www.licencebureau.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/Driving-in-Britain-as-visitor-or-resident.pdf

There is a customer enquiry service:

Phone (Customer Enquiries): 0870 240 0009 (lines are open between 8am and 8.30pm Monday to Friday, and between 8am and 5.30pm on Saturdays).

I would recommend you call them and ask.

Rgds,

Aitch.

Load of c**p ignore it, too many keyboard warriors on here haven’t a clue what they’re talking about.

Richard, you have the aura of a man who knows everything about Spain, and that the keyboard warriors “haven’t a clue what they’re talking about”… Can you substantiate your expertise in this post, as you clearly seem to know what’s right and what is incorrect…?

Hi, I moved back to England in June after living in Spain for 17 years, I am 74 years old and held a Spanish driving licence. Changed it for a UK one, no problem, no driving test all done very quickly. Hope this helps
