For those who don't know, a gota fría (cold drop) is a weather phenomenon which can happen at this time of year. It happens when the warm and moist air over the Mediterranean meets cold air coming in from the Atlantic. All the moisture in the air turns into rain, leading to truly torrential rains, often accompanied by strong winds. The worst that we've personally experienced was about 15 cm of rain in a few hours, leading to our neighbours coming round to check we were OK, and to me subsequently having to repaint the ceilings to cover up the water stains where the rain had got through our tiled roof.

Spanish TV and papers are presently saying a lot about the possibility of torrential rains between now and Sunday, and the met.office have issued a special alert about the possibility of up to 20 cm of rain. Some of the papers, and at least one Spanish TV channel, are saying it could be the worst gota fría since year 2000.

Looking at the rainfall radar, Valencia province have already had heavy rain in places, whereas Alicante province has been clear.

The southern Costa Blanca seems to have its own micro-climate, and may escape it, but be warned.

It's my usual outlook - hope for the best, but prepare for the worst!
