We arrive at 2.30pm in Santander and are looking for dog friendly places to stop on way to Altea, any suggestions?

Pete.

Not sure whether you are looking to do an overnight stop?

If so I would be tempted to  just go for it. 8hr drive. Stop 1/2 way for an evening meal. At home in your own bed for about 11.30 PM.

I do a similar drive on a regular basis San Sebastian to Villamartin with my 2 very dogs. Normally stop twice. To give the dogs and stretch and grab a bite to eat. Service areas vary in terms of the offer.

I get it. Don't think I would want to arrive that late if it was my first visit.

Because your going to Altea  the best route is the one I usually take. Pamplona, Zaragoza, Teruel, Valencia.    Really nice drive to Pamplona through the mountains. Then pretty soulless the rest of the way. Mid point would be Zaragoza and a natural place to overnight. Do a search in this area there will be plenty of options. Another route people do is via Burgos,  but this is a lot longer drive for you.
