Would someone please recommend a cell phone plan and what the average rate would be for a US citizen who will be coming to the Altea area as a long-term resident? Thank you

Recommending a plan without knowing exactly what your requirements are is really ‘how long is a piece of string?”!!!!

All the major European service providers have shops and online presence: Movistar - the main Spanish. Provider - Orange (French company) - Yoigo, low cost and efficient, Vodafone, well known and reliable. There are others.

However, if you need the ability to make calls back to the US then you would be better off consulting the providers individually to establish charges.

Most of the contracts are similar between the companies, and they all offer ‘add ons’ such as TV streaming and so on. The prices vary dependent upon how much ‘voice’ allowance you think you need, how much data allowance etc.

Your easiest solution to begin with may be to visit the individual websites - which quite often have different language options - and at least you will then have an idea. Contracts etc can usually be arranged online, although there are lots of outlets and shops. You will need your NIE number, which you will require to complete any form of legal transaction here, to enable them to validate the arrangement, although they may accept your passport ID.
