Hello all,

My wife and I are looking at possibly relocating from Barcelona to the Altea area. We are coming down next week to view apartments to rent and I would like to know how you would assess the convenience of living in Altea, such as, distance to grocery stores, are there more preferable areas or neighborhoods to live, is a car required to get around, are there communities or clubs that we can become members of?

Thanks in advance,

Mark & Karina

Hi , car essential for Altea hills.Altea old town is car restricted so sometimes difficult with shopping ,deliveries etc. There are 2 tram stations and regular buses which are both very cheap.Bus to benidorm from the center of town every 15 minutes.I stayed there for 12 months and lived at the bottom of the old town in a one bedroom apartment for 500 euros per month.I also looked for ex pat groups without any luck but made lots of friends by going out walking ,to the beach and stopping for coffee .Most people will stop and talk .

Is this true even if you have documentation stating you are coming for a specific purpose from the real estate agency?

Not sure if that would be regarded as essential travel?

I haven't lived permanently in Altea but I did have a holiday home there for many years and still visit regularly from where I live 25 miles away so I know it pretty well.

The town centre has many small supermarkets, a very good daily indoor market and a visiting fruit veg etc market every Tuesday. If you don't want to have a car or you don't drive, I would recommend the general town centre area for renting.

The areas just to the south towards Albir are also well served for small supermarkets, so that could be an option.

If you drive, it opens up lots of options in the outer suburbs or close by.

Altea la Vella is also worth considering, not in Altea but a separate village just into the hills.

Altea has clean air, beautiful azure water and a great promenade. As you will know the beach is cobbles.

There is a lot of "money" in Altea due to the thousands of villas in the hills above - have a drive around Don Cayo Golf Club and you'll get the idea.

The type of Brits who live there aren't clubby expat types as a rule, can't say I've ever seen a British bar there - but you would soon make friends by chatting in bars and restaurants.

Thanks, Kelvin. I think I will give it a shot anyway though.

Am I reading you right Mark D Weaver ?  ... you are telling us all that you intend to break the law and deliberately to travel from a higher-infection area to a lower-infection area ?

Well done. The world really needs this kind of behaviour.
