Hi,

We are three families, 6 adults and 4 children (13, 10, 7 and 3 year old).  We have booked a villa with a private pool in Pueblo Mascarat for 10 days in June.  The location on the satellite map of the villa looks great as it is approx a 5 minute walk (downhilll!!)to the marina.  We want a relaxing holiday and all agree we would prefer not to have to hire a car and instead use taxis as necessitates.  We spend so much time driving at home, we feel a holiday should be just that!

We will definitely visit Altea and one or two other place of interest but we are very happy to spend time with the children in the pool, beach, visiting local restaurants / bars - we will not be looking for a hectic night life.  So! My question is this 'DO WE NEED TO HIRE A CAR?! Are taxis easily contactable? Ideally, if there was one reliable local taxi company we could call on when needed it would be great! We will have to stock up on supplies in the local supermarket too on a number of occasions and transport will certainly be needed. Perhaps there is a regular bus service from Mascarat to Altea?

We would greatly welcome all advice in relation to all of the above

Thanks in advance.

Hi as far as i know there is no bus service from there to altea or any bus to mascarat and it is a fare walk...to anywhere .radio taxis are good in altea. A car would be a good idea as if you want to go out to places you would need to either get bus from altea or a taxi . Most of restaurants are in altea or altea la vella as are large supermarkets.

Interrent at the airport are good we use them but we get the local bus from airport to benidorm then the no 10 or tram to altea..

Hope it helps

Theres a supermarket at the top of the hill on the main road. Mascarat is set on the side of a very steep hill and the walk back from the Marina to your apartment is a novelty that will soon wear off. Ditto the walk up to and back from the supermarket in June heat. Altea is not reasonably walkable unless you and your family are Mo Farah like. Altea taxis will give you a card after the first journey so you can call them on demand but the costs will soon mount up as taxis are quite expensive here.

To give the kids the best holiday experience I seriously recommend hiring a car. You can go at your own pace as the locals are used to it, and it will really enhance your holiday.

I know Altea very well as used to live up near the golf club at Altea La Vieja so if you have any questions fire away!

Best regards Steve

If you want to get around  I strongly recommend getting a car hire. Especially with kids.

I have an apartment in Pueblo Mascarat. We use a company called Doyouspain to get rent cars. They are supercheap and myself and friends have done it for a long time and no issues. They are like a comparison site for all the main rental companies. The prices are so cheap but go up a bit in school holidays. I use the local taxi firm for when we plan to go to a restaurant in Altea and have a drink. I dont think they are too bad price wise. The restaurants in the Marina are good but some are pricey. For a cheap family meal the pizza pasta place is great value and theres a nice little bar next door. Hope this helps. Any questions follow up and I will try to help.

Further to my earlier post the taxi number is +34 966 810 010.

You cant book ahead you just ring when you want one and ask them how long. A normal size taxi in to Altea is normally 12 to 15 euros. Not sure if you need a bigger one.

Good evening Franky,

I have a 2 bed apartment in Pueblo Mascarat overlooking Altea bay.

Beautiful area isnt it!

I come to Spain and my apartment every month in season and the heath benefits are great.

As I’m over there lots I have a modern Ford S-Max people carrier.

It is insured for any driver over 24 and under 70 years of age.

I rent out my apartment too with or without car.

Regards

Andy

Hi Andy,

Thanks a million for your reply.  Pueblo Mascarat looks fabulous! You know, we just had a family 'think in' in relation to the holiday, and, really the only argument for us renting a car is to go to the supermarket to stock up on food etc for the apartment.  Going to the supermarket won't entail the whole lot of us going either! Realistically, we decided that when going on day trips, everyone wanted to have the freedom to have a few drinks with lunch and dinner and not to have to be a 'designated driver' and was willing to pay whatever taxi rates are for that freedom.  Yes! I hear you Andy! You probably think we are nuts!! However, I gladly welcome your advice and local knowledge. Would you recommend hiring a vehicle purely for supermarket runs?  There is no doubt we won't be walking long distances especially with younger children, one of whom has Down Syndrome and HATES long walks in the heat!

Our apartment is located between the roads Carrer Estribord and Calle Currica.  We are the first one from the marina end if that makes sense. We are a perfect distance to walk to the marina, local restaurants and the beach. What are your thoughts?

Kind regards,

Franky.

Only stumbling block you have is that there is no public transport up until you get to the coast road. That’s s long walk up steep hills but yes you could use a taxi.

Calpe is your main town and they have a taxi rank on Gabriel Miro the Main Street that runs down to the beach and where the Moors and Christians festival come down.

Make contact with a tacit driver, get his business card and your sorted.

You are indeed so close to two beaches and Marina. I would get a rent car but you could do big shops by cab. For me the best supermarket is 5 k away in Calpe. Its brand new and is called My Mercat. Its like Waitrose of Spain. You can walk up the hill to Mas y mas which is good but you will need to send your strongest fittest folks its a fair way and very very steep. One last tip the beaches are very stoney and uneven under the sea. Make sure everyone wears water shoes. There are also sea urchins but not sure what seasons.
