I am returning to the UK after being a permanent resident in Spain for 16 years. I have a TIE card with permanent residency. I am unsure whether I have to hand in my TIE card or keep it, knowing the card is valid for 5 years if I live outside Spain. Any advice gratefully received.

Hello

From what I read above, it sounds like your TIE card is only temporary because it's valid for 5 years.

A permanent TIE card is valid for 10 years.....

I do believe if your out of Spain for more that 6 months, you automatically loose your residence and have to apply again.

Im not sure if you need to inform the town hall and the police station to revoke your TIE card.

I hope someone can clarify this because I'm almost sure of this and hope this helps you.

Thanks Sue, as a permanent resident, my TIE card is valid for 10 years. As I have to return to the UK on a longterm basis, I wanted to double check whether I have to hand it in now or later. I also read on a legal website, that if you have the permanent resident status, you can live outside of Spain for 5 years. Just wanted to be clear what my options are before I hand it in.

Yes it is 5 years on a permanent TIE card.

Im not sure what you need to do but I would first de register on the padrón and tell them your leaving. Not sure what you do with your card.  I will have a look to see if I find anything out and let you know if I do.

Hello

Yes, sorry I was confused and just read your post again.

You can be out of Spain for up to 5 years.

I would personally just go back to the UK and do nothing for now.  It gives you chance to come back for 5 years and if you do come back to Spain after 5 years, see what happens then.

If you decide to come back in 3 years, you should have no problems.  If you hand your TIE card back in then you will have to start all over again.

I know it's all a bit confusing.

Sue 😘

Hello again

I've just seen this and took screenshots for you.  Hope this helps.

Sorry, I'm rushing out.  The first photo is page 3 then 2 then 1
