Just recently my Freesat has been dropping out on BBC channels, usually in the daytime. It tends to go for up to a minute at a time then gradually gets worse, till it goes altogether, then it comes back later.

A banner at the top says no or week signal. This has never happened with BBC before, though I'm used to it on the UKTV channels.  It can hardly be a heat problem at the moment and it's too early for the March and October issues.

Has anyone else been experiencing this?   Do I need to be looking for a problem closer to home?  Would doing a factory reset help as I'm unaware what may have changed since I last did one?

The long coax to the house has been changed which did not seem to alter anything.

Strange how I always seem to be asking Freesat questions.

I've seen a post about this recently apparently it's something to do with the BBC changing over to HD, don't know if this is your issue but according to the post SD will be defunct sometime this year. Hope this makes sense. It might need someone who has more knowledge than me to explain this!

Even with a 1.9m dish the change to HD means I have lost BBC1 on 101 on my Freesat box.

Not really a problem as it's a back up as I use IPTV most of the time.

Where I do find it handy is for recording programmes on commercial channels when it's much easier to skip forward through the adverts.

Thanks for the suggestions.
I have checked what channels I am getting on my box having found a list of what's HD and what isn't.   I can get a fair number of stations designated as HD, so I assume the problem is not related to the SD turn-off.  There are always some on Freesat that I can't get.  I have had BBC South for a while and I had no idea it had changed or when.. Quest HD is another of my favourites.

I have just switched over to BBC2 and that's working fine.  BBC1 is still off.  I think that's a bit odd, but what do I know?

So sadly I am still open to suggestions.

BBC One South SD closed last week. For Sky and Freesat users, it was replaced on 101 with BBC One South HD. However, it is temporarily on a "non BBC" frequency (slightly weaker and trickier to receive than the other BBC frequencies) for the time being whilst they do all their changes.

"I have just switched over to BBC2 and that's working fine.  BBC1 is still off.  I think that's a bit odd, but what do I know?" - BBC Two HD and BBC One South HD are on totally different satellites, beams and frequencies! So it is perfectly acceptaqble to get one and not the other.

BBC One South HD will move to an easier to receive BBC frequency in the next few weeks. Assumption been that if you can get BBC 2 HD on 102, and BBC News HD on 200 (or 503 on Sky), then you should be OK with all the changes when they have been completed.

Or try a different BBC One region. This week, BBC One East and BBC One East Midlands converted from SD to HD. The SD channels closed, and replaced on the guide with HD versions (101 if you used these areas as your default postcode, up in the 950s if not).

(I try to keep up to date here : https://www.satandpcguy.com/bbc-changes-2023-updates/ )

Otherwise, just use a different BBC region, from channel 950 upwards.

Quest HD is also on a tricky to receive frequency (like the UKTVs) and needs the right sized dish (which you do not say what size you are using), and good LNB, all perfectly aligned. Even a few millimters misalignment can cause channel not to be available)

Other things are :

-a few weeks ago your area had wind gusts of over 130kmph...dishes are designed for 80kmph only, do your dish could have moved out of alignment in the winds, or even worse, warped.

- If floor mounted, rain can soften the ground so the whole thing can shift.

- line of sight disrupted by tree growth

- And of course, if using a 1.8m or 2.4m dish, insects inside the LNB can caused signals to come and go. Cobwebs around the LNB are a good indication of nasties in the area.

"but according to the post SD will be defunct sometime this year." - BBC will continue to run SD channels until March 2024. All regions will be in HD, but they will run a single SD BBC one, so no local news or optouts, for another year.

Many thanks for the suggestions. As things on BBC1 are in a state of flux I can cope with what I have got so long as I know what is going on.  It's the not knowing that 's the problem.

As I said, I have had BBC1 South on channel 101 for a long time with the BH post code set in. It comes up as HD so one must assume it is and the fact that I still have it confirms that,  now SD has gone.

Quest has been well behaved for a while now, so if it ain't broke, I'll not fix it.

I'll sit tight and not change anything and hopefully all will become clear soon.(pun intended).

It happens in winter. (Always,) Something to do with the axis of the Earth relative to the satellite position. (Honest!)

I have a 1.9m dish and it's the same.

I'm planning on running a cable to Jodrell Bank. Their dish is bigger than Prince Harry's head.

Doubtful, as with the satellites in geosynchronous orbit, they stay in the relative same space (no pun!).

And many others would have the same issue also, which 99.9% of people do not...

And it would affect all channels, not just one or two...

And in fact winter is the best time for signals, signals like the cooler air... signals weaken more in the summer with all the heat.

when the main issue with the OP is the frequency of the requried BBC one HD region...

So if you are having issues each winter, then either the dish is not large enough for where you are, or not aligned correctly, or a poor lnb, or bad lnb alignment, poor cabling, etc.... which with a 1.8m dish in Ontinyent all channels should be available all times of day and year (apart from in heavy rain).
