Hi there - just an intro really, we don't know what we don't know yet :(

We plan to move here next year, and visiting this area end of Mar 2022 for a look around - it looks lovely. (Covid permitting!)

I'm sure we'll be posting questions in due course but if there's any 'golden rule' that you can share it would be very much appreciated.

Best wishes, Chris

If at all possible, rent first and live like a resident and not a tourist. It is very expensive to buy and sell properties here so if you get it wrong, not only could it take ages to sell you will be massively out of pocket. Try to visit the area in high summer as well as winter because it could change sigificantly.
Never pay any money to an estate agent and never use the solicitor recommended by them. Don't fall in love with a property, especially online, you need to use your head!

I can only assume that you know......

If you are a UK passport holder and want to live here in Spain permanently then you need to apply for a visa from the Spanish consulate. You will need to meet the income and healthcare requirements.

Hello Steve

Thanks for your response.

I will have an Irish passport (ie EU passport) by then and my husband is going through the process but his will take much longer so will be on a British passport.

We've engaged an Immigration lawyer who tells us there is a way for Carl (husband) to move, I think there are more costs involved.  We'll no doubt find out in due course.

Thanks for getting in touch.

Kind regards, Chris

A couple of websites to have a look at are as follows:

For bureaucratic items:   Citizens Advice Service Spain

Driving in Spain:              N332 - run in collaboration with officers of the Guardia Civil for English speaking people.

In addition to the above beware dogs in neighbouring houses, it can be a problem given some owners leave them out all day to bark. It seems some in Spain like a dog to act as a burglar alarm.

We are dog owners and are normally fairly defensive when people criticise owners but there is often a different way of thinking here, be careful and know your neighbours before you part with any money :)

Other than that do a proper budget projection and think about a car given public transport is patchy in many areas.

Ah ok, thanks for the tip!

We don't have a dog and I'm sure that can be very annoying.

Thanks again, Chris

Having rented when we first moved here I wholeheartedly agree with Cheryl, also like she said make sure you employ your own gestor not the one from the Estate Agents.

Hope your move goes smoothly when you eventually come over :-)

Hi Cheryl - thank you very much for these tips, they're very useful.

We have thought about renting first so it's good to hear that's something considered best..  As we don't know the area and are visiting end of March, I guess there's only so much we could see/feel, so I think we'll probably do as you suggest.  Moving is stressful enough without maybe having to repeat the process ... argh!

Thanks again Cheryl, we appreciate your advise.

Best wishes, Chris
