Have an opel astra 1900 diesel putting out black smoke on acceleration. Anyone know a good mobile mechanic who could give me a diagnosis and quote. Serious replies please....smarmy comments kills forums oh its 2005 so not young.... I suspect mas or dpf filter just saying... Cheers

Many diesels with a good number of km on the clock leave a trail of black smoke in their wake, commonly due to worn injectors overfueling the engine and they can be expensive to replace, there are other causes though.

Mines even older than yours and does it but it's continues to pass its ITV.

I'll worry about it when it doesn't.

If it's only smoking when accelerating hard I'd imagine it will be an air leak on the intake side (boost leak) check all your piping for any damage, splits, pin holes etc, it's not uncommon for the smaller vacuum pipes to pop off or split at the join.

Cleaning the EGR is an easy enough job, just very dirty.

The MAF & MAP sensors can be cleaned very easily, a few minutes each if you have basic tools.

The DPF is between €350-€400, buy a decent one, cheap ones never last very long.

To help clear out the DPF, get onto the motorway in 4th gear cruising at 120 kph for 10 - 15 minutes, you need to keep the revs up, occasionally accelerating hard, foot to the floor only up to 130 kph. That will help burn off anything in the DPF.

That is assuming yours has a DPF, from memory I don't think it will have. They weren't really used by Vauxhall until 2006 & made obligatory in 2009
