Hi , we  have 2 cats that we are looking to bring with us when we move permanently and was wondering if anyone has done this and how they adapt to the hot climate . Any advice is welcome

Thank you

Hi,

Back in 2003 we moved over here permanently bringing our 9 year old cat with us.

At first she was a bit stressed but we kept her in a quiet room for a couple of days then let her wander round the house to get used to all the strange sights and smells. After a couple of weeks we gradually introduced her to the patio and then the garden. I won't lie and say it was all perfect as one morning at 3am she managed to get herself stuck on next doors patio with an 8ft wall and couldn't get out, needless to say I had to clamber over and drag her back!

She managed to live a couple of very happy years before passing away with kidney failure . She loved the sunshine and pottering around the garden with us. Cats prefer heat to cold, originated from Egypt, and adapt very well if you take things slowly.

Good luck when you move over and send us a message if you like as we also live in La Siesta.

We brought our two, as above they adapted quite well. Our only problem was that one of them developed the most hideous allergy to the fleas here, the other being unaffected entirely. The poor creature at times had huge virtually raw seeping patches on her skin . The only treatment in the end which the vet could devise was a monthly injection of antihistamine and a three weekly cycle of Stronghold Plus applied to her. This kept it more or less at bay, but if we slipped or missed an injection or treatment it came roaring back.

When they both subsequently had to be put to sleep as a result of general old age, kidney failure and usual cat related age deterioration , although a year apart, we adopted two feral cats from a rescue centre. They are now almost completely tame, although it’s taken a long time, but, curiously, neither of them cope well with the heat in the summer, they don’t know what to do with themselves!!!

Hi ,

Thank you for the the replies and it sounds as though they should be able to settle in the warmer climate, although it may take time. Also could anyone recommend a cattery near La Siesta for when we visit the UK.

Thank you all

Hi,

We're lucky enough that when we go away our neighbour looks after our cats ( 3 of our own and 5 semi ferals!) by going round to our house twice a day.

A friend of mine highly recommend Feline Friends Cattery in Dolores which only takes in cats so any nervous of dogs don't have to worry.

The website is www.felinefriendscattery.com

There is a place in Montesinos called Paws and Claws that has good reviews but depending on whether your cats are bothered by dogs as also has kennels.

Hope you find what you're looking for.

I moved to Spain in October 2020 bringing both my cats (11 & 17) and 2 dogs (10 & 3) with me.  All of them have accepted life here just as they did when we moved in the UK.  I think they like the cool tiled floors to lay on. Sadly I lost my 17 year old in March this year.  He went out one night and didn't come back.

Animals are very good at adjusting and as long as you give them time to adjust they will be fine. If you are coming over in the winter months then they will also have time to adjust to the temperatures as they increase.
