Hi i am wondering if anyone knows, is it possible to re register an Irish car in Spain? We are here a few weeks and don't know if we should get rid of the car or if we can 're register it.

Hi Ray thank you for your reply and yes  Irish car RHD, we plan to stay, at least for a year, see how we get on, We were trying to see if we could just 're register the car in Spanish plates, but do not know if this is possible? Or as you say just get a Spanish runaround. The problem is trying to find a reputable place to get one! I think I have scared myself reading stuff about buying second hand cars in Spain. We do not know anyone here and are trying to learn the language albeit very slowly! Also as we are a retired couple we are managing on a budget, we had just got a new clutch  in and other bits and pieces done before we left for Spain.  So,...... If we could stay driving this it would be cheaper.

Assuming it's some sort of standard euro box registering is not that difficult of a challenge but if you don't feel up to it yourself then there are numerous people who will do it for you - at a price.

If you go that route then in very broad terms you should budget up to €1000 for the process or possibly a lot more when you factor in the cost of switching to proper LHD headlights which in some cases can cost that much on their own, deflectors will not cut it!

No problem!

Come to Crevillent, Murcia and Ledo will do it for you for 150 Euros.  They are 2 lovely ladies but don't speak English.  If you need help just drop me a Private Message and I will give you a hand with pleasure.

regards

Richard

Hi Richard, we are thinking about it at the moment, as it is a Mitsubishi Lancer saloon and would need a change

Of headlights to L.H.D. These might cost more than the car! Thank you for your help, if we decide to go with it, I will private message you.

That's a typical charge for someone to do it for you and if it were a simple transfer of ownership of an already Spanish regged car that's all you would pay but in the case of a first registration of a foreign car then you have things like import taxes (based on value), ITV (if over 4 years old, SUMO (road tax), lawyers fees, and the cost of the plates to add in so like I said best budget around €1000 and be happy if you come away with less.

Hi Patricia

I know nobody will agree with me but you Can insure your Irish/English registered car in Spain for one year and be covered to drive in UK for three months as long as it has a valid mot.

The police are  equipped with the same technology as UK police in that they will check that a car has an mot.and valid Insurance.

Regards Bob

Hi Bob, that sounds interesting, how would I go about it? Do you have any insurance companies in mind that could do it? If you have could you send me info please? Thank you for your information
