Agents Fees - Property Rental

A general enquiry, which I think may result in a variety of answers depending on what the area is?!
I am looking for a long - long term rent. I appreciate the 11 month contract and renewal etc but ideally something for 3 years or more as I dont wish to keep moving!
My question is that through my searches I am finding that agents are typically charging the tenant (ie Me) 1 month rent as their introduction fee.
I have questioned this with the agents and been dismissed by them.
My argument is that the property is being marketed and shown on behalf of the owner, in the same way a sale would be conducted. So why is it left to the tenant to stand the charges?
Can anyone offer guidance or advice on the matter?
