Please see the attached images.

Does anyone know what is causing these black marks to appear on the white lines of a glass shower screen? They only appear on the white detail of the shower screen.

My customer has asked me what is causing it and my immediate response was mould, of some type, and my solution was to apply bleach. This did in fact remove the marks, however, they come back every few days or week at most!

The customer does not actually use this shower. It is located in a downstairs toilet which has the usual setup of a sink, bidet and toilet as well as the single cubicle shower. It is also worth noting that this problem has only started happening about 3 months ago and the marks were not there for the 3 years prior to that! As the shower is not used, no products have previously been used to clean the shower glass.

Ideally, I am looking to understand what is causing the problem so we can resolve for her once and for all. Prevention would be better than cure!

Thank you in advance for any suggestions

Don't know.... But sounds like mould attatching to calcium deposit & likes humid conditions. Give a go with anti-moho squirt. My lady-friend swears by amoiaco, for calcium deposit use agua fuerte ( dilute). V

Thank you Villas. I was thinking about agua fuerte but I have been warned about the damage it does to anything metallic.

I agree with your way of thinking.... need to get rid of the calcium and then the mould has nothing to cling on to!

Apprecaite your guidance

UKHandyMan4Hire, I am In agreeance with diagnosis suggesting the cause as being mould attaching to calcium deposits.

If problem has only materialised during the past three months then some environmental change has taken place within the room during that period.

Increase in Humidity conditions could be the root cause.

A room vent of some sort may have become blocked and if non present then installation of one, preferably a humidity controlled fan, may help,

Hope you get to the bottom of the cause.

I'm as puzzled as you are - it looks too light for mould, which I'd have expected to appear in the edges, and too dark for calcium. As bleach hasn't solved it, then I doubt it's mould, especially as the shower isn't used and the humidity will be low.

What are the white lines - is it some form of paint or of plastic? If it's plastic, then possibly a previous cleaning agent may have sunk into it. Clean the surface and it looks OK, but whatever the embedded stain is, then it might work its way back to the surface.

I'd first try agua fuerte on a small patch and see what happens - it's not a very strong acid, but wear latex etc gloves.

Next I'd try a mild abrasive - Silvo, Brillo, T-cut, even toothpaste, etc - again on a small patch.

Margaret's currently wearing purple latex gloves to protect her nails. Needless to say, I've hidden the Vaseline.
