OK, there comes a time when you have to put your hands up and admit "I am at a loss and need assistance"!!!

I have a customer who has a really stubborn pool light, probably more the cover than the fitting! I am unable to remove the pool light cover without fear of damaging the fitting completely. A picture of the fitting is shown.

I have tried from outside the pool as well as submersing myself, literally, in at the deep end and tried. I believe the cover may require rotating, but to no avail, perhaps there is a specialist tool required to turn it (A lump hammer perhaps?!)

The same 3 hole arrangement is shown in the 6 oclock position as well as the 12 oclock position. There are no brand markings and no other obvious signs of how to remove the cover, which I believe will then expose the actual fitting screw so I can remove the fitting and replace the lamp inside.

All help gratefully received.

All humour about 'how many people does it take to change a lightbulb' widely expected!!!

Thank you

Well, I worked on pools and pool lights for ten years and I don't remember seeing a light like that! 99% of pool lights are made by Astral.

Normally, surface mounted light units (which this appears to be), drop onto a bracket which is screwed to the wall, and are held in place on that bracket with a single cross-headed grub screw. To get at the grub screw, you first have to remove a trim-ring. But your light doesn't appear to have any trim. What's inside that square hole? Is there any bit of trim that looks like it could be prised off?

Let me know how you get on.

Geoff.

We're getting there, Will. I did a search for Astral, thanks to Geoff, and it looks like you have to push a screwdriver down the hole in the top to release a catch. See the maintenance section of the destruction book:

Well done All, great team work !

U.K HandyMan4Hire, I have the same Specialist tool as you for such trying jobs. 😃. I do hope you now find not too much 'Resistance 'in releasing the light fitting, also, when you have finished the job do ensure the fitting is re installed correctly as the Customer will not want any ' Current 'in the water.  Good Luck  👍😀.

Thank you, everyone, for your prompt feedback and humour!

Geoff, thank you for your valuable input which helped Jim locate a guide (not Jim's guide on this occasion!) but that does appear to be the correct manual, the outer decorative ring has the markings described and the word TOP also located on it.

As described, I was expecting some form of holding screw on the outer ring, which would likely then reveal a fixing screw and the removal of which would allow me to lift the fitting out on to the poolside. I can see some sort of mechanism behind the hole above the three-hole arrangement, and tried to pry this down as well as rotating the cover plate in both directions... to no avail!

The destructions for maintenance refers to the spline of the mount? I am a little lost at that stage, it may become much clearer once I can get in front of the fitting again next week.

I will keep you posted.

Thank you all once again for your responses :o)

Sorry Jim, and UKHandyman, my reply was open to misinterpretation!

When I said that 99% of pool lights are made by Astral, I should have continued with "....but this one isn't"!

I'm getting a very vague recollection of a non-Astral light, where it came off by giving it an eighth of a turn anti-clockwise because it had a bayonet type mounting onto the bracket, but I think I had to remove a grub screw first.

Are you sure that there isn't a grub screw down in that square black hole?

For removing and refitting small screws, I always used to put a dab of Vaseline on the end of my screwdriver to avoid dropping it, especially in the winter when the water's too cold to jump in and retrieve it!

But then, I'm probably teaching you how to suck eggs now!

Geoff.

Hi Geoff, it is an Astral - just look at the instruction book I gave the link for above. I'd got nowhere on searching until you mentioned Astral and when I did a targeted search for them only, there it was.

So sorry Jim!

I was replying in haste before going off to work, and didn't check your link.

They must have changed the design since my days of pool repairs.

I must think twice before giving any more advice on pools! Still, at least my post helped you locate it.

Geoff.
