Hi all

we have seen an apartment we are interested in purchasing as a holiday home as a first step to retiring to Spain located in Benejúzar but do not know the area at all so we're looking for a little guidance.

Amenities, public transport, area in general would be a great help.

Thanks in advance Gary...

Do you like to go to the beach?

Do you think that drive to buy almost everything?

Do you like go to restaurants/bars?

Hi Miguel

Multi national would be a good area

Not worried about the beach can drive if I hire a vehicle or loacal transport?

Ideally would like to be somewhere with an area to go and sit get a coffee or beer and watch the world go by

Does the area have this and any sort of shops?

Gary...

Hello both, if you could give a few pointers as Ros has asked it would help us quite a bit. What has drawn you to Benejuzar? Google "flooding in Benejuzar". such as: https://www.euroweeklynews.com/2016/12/20/flood-clean-up-begins/#.XEV4U1xKjIU

It is next to the Segura river (mosquitos) and the whole Vega Baja is the floodplain for the Segura (Vega means floodplain). The Vega Baja is quite a dry area and seems to have it´s own micro climate but when it rains, it rains and the town is inches above the water table.
There is a post a few pages down from someone in Bigastro stating that few English voices are heard so unless you have good Spanish, you will struggle because few speak English outside of ex-pat areas.
Buying and selling here is not cheap and property can take months, if not years, to sell because there are simply so many for sale all the time. Humidity is high so damp is a problem in a lot of houses and it gets very cold at night in winter so heating is essential and, due to their construction, Spanish houses are difficult to keep warm. Getting it right first time is so important.
That said, the quality of life can be amazing and I have never regretted moving here. I can only suggest that you visit, hire a car and get out and about, trying to get out of holiday mode to consider how "normal life" can be lived in different areas. Think about supermarkets, doctors, hospitals etc. If you enjoy the coast, you would be a good 20 minute drive from Guardamar. Visit different areas at different times of the year because there can be big differences.

Take a virtual walk around the town on google maps!

Nice little town, with a car or even bikes you ar mins away from Almoradi, Orihuela etc.  We are 20 mins away.  Love it here.  Climate is amazing, life is great.  I would recommend this "area".  But yes perhaps come over and have a few coffees in the town, see how it feels.  I think you would be OK as the town has supermarkets etc.  I am sure there will be enough English for you.  Just ensure the property is well secure (and Garden etc) when you lock and leave.  We are lucky with brilliant neighbours who live here and overlook us when we are not here.

Good luck.

To add to the other comments. Benejuzar is a lovely friendly working Spanish town. There are not many English residents here so you need to know that and be prepared to speak or learn some Spanish. Loads of bars and restaurants, pizzeria and yes they are all Spanish. It has a vet, one large Consum plus 3 other supermarkets including a Hiperber. It has an indoor heated pool in the centre and in July and August the outdoor municipal pool opens near the Sierra. I absolutely love it here people are friendly and helpful and you can get local people to do little jobs including the garages. The main Square is lovely too.

My family have had a place here for over 15 years down by the river. I like the town, I've seen the addition of building projects and a supermarket etc over the years, however I find it inconvenient for public transport. A car is a must to get around. Im not eve nsure if local buses even run into the town centre.

I like the town square, with a couple of bars around about. My favourite tapas bar is near to the R/A  near the bridge over the R Segura  - Casa Antonio. Second being Bar Mamalu. I was disappointed when a kebab shop opened though nearby. The church on the hill is a very nice walk. Very Spanish, very quiet and laid back.

There used to be more English people on our street but not so many now, several just abandoned their places for various reasons. The mountain and agricultural backdrop is very nice, its a good position in terms of proximity to the seaside - Guardamar, Santa Pola, La Mata are all 15mins odd away. Nearest train sta is located at Callosa de Segura a couple of miles away enabling a trip by train to  Alicante if you dont want to drive.  I also like Oriheula as well for its historic buildings and city bustle - its not too big.
