I'm thinking about selling my UK RHD Spanish plated car next year. It would be a private sale. Can anyone advise me about the paperwork transfer procedure?

My specific question is this - if I agree a price with a buyer (likely British) would we go together to a Gestor to do the transfer of ownership? And assuming that's correct, with a prior appointment would a Gestor do the paperwork on the spot, or do you expect to have to go back?

An ideal sale scenario would be 1. Agree sale with buyer 2. Go to Gestor who does paperwork 3. Funds transferred to me by the buyer while we wait at the Gestoria 4. Buyer drives away

I'm assuming that it's not going to be that simple though! Can anyone who's sold a UK RHD car imported onto Spanish plates to a Spanish non resident (or resident) let me know how they got on?

Kind regards, Steve

Hi Steve,

We did this last year with my husband's UK RHD car on Spanish plates.  A "lesson learned" from me is to bear in mind who will pay the transfer tax - some websites say it's the seller's responsibility, others say it's down to the purchaser.  As the seller, it's in your interests to make sure everything is done correctly - if not and you remain as the registered owner, you could end up liable for infractions committed by the new owner.  So I'd suggest getting a quote from a local gestor for how much the transfer tax and costs will be specifically for your car and include that in your advertising - probably best shown separately, as including it in the sale price could make the car look expensive when prospective buyers are making comparisons.  For my husband's car, we agreed to split the costs with the buyer.  I booked an appointment for them at a local gestoria and they went together, so that it was all done in one appointment.  Although the purchaser lived in Spain, his father paid for the car - as he lived in the UK, he sent a bank to bank transfer from there, which meant Sabadell charged us €18 for the privilege of receiving the money into our Spanish bank account!

We used Orke Servicios in Los Montesinos.  I appreciate that you're 'tup north, but I'm including the recommendation for other members reading this who are local to me.

Kind regards,

Kim

For the record the car being a RHD UK import is irrelevant.

If Spanish registered it will be treated no differently to any other in the selling/transferring process.

Thanks Kimmy. Very helpful, and interesting to hear about your split of the costs too.

Cheers, Steve
