Hello,

We are likely moving to Spain this year, around the Benidorm area - e.g. Polop/La Nucia/Finestrat.  We have 2 persian cats, 9 and 10 years old.  We're looking to rent a villa for a year.

I've read about the processionary caterpillar and perhaps there being more ticks than here in the UK.  They are very pampered cats (we don't have any children sadly) and I think everything else seems fairly straightforward planning wise.  It's now just down to whether this is a silly move for the cats.

So, if there are cat owners on here who could allay our fears in terms of the heat, the insects and anything else we might need to think about, I would appreciate it!  We'd let them out - but only in the garden.  Luckily, they can't jump very high and so we've been looking at villas with decent walls/fences. :)

Thank you so much Ray for taking the time to write such a useful and informative reply!  I shall relay the good news to my ever-anxious wife!

We brought our two little black cats, they travelled with professional pet transporters as did RayD’s. They were delivered to a local cattery until we had possession of our house. This took all the stress of dealing with them whilst we had the removers in and so forth. However, one of them has developed an extremely distressing skin allergy, caused by a reaction to the fleas here. It results in red, raw, weeping patches which are exacerbated because of the instinctive scratching and licking reactions. After a great deal of experimentation, with the help of the excellent and very kind local Spanish vet, we have found that the only way of dealing with it is to apply antiflea treatment (NOT Frontline under any circumstances, fleas are now immune to it) every three weeks and she visits the vet Jose every 4 weeks for an antihistamine injection. If the routine is interrupted/overlooked, the cycle starts all over again. Jose says that it is a condition which is apparently very common in dogs and rare in cats - just our luck! The other one is unaffected entirely. They also seem to require worming here more often that UK. However, we do live out in the campo at the edge of the pine forest which backs onto our garden. We had 4 huge infestations of caterpillars in the garden, despite patrolling and cutting down and disposing of nests on our property. We dealt with the caterpillars before the cats got near them and we are doing our best to keep them within our boundaries for the time being as the whole area is heavily infested with the damn creatures, but most of them do seem to have gone by now. The vet charges 15 eu for every injection and I buy antiflea 6 ampoules at a time which costs around 90 eu - with two cats it’s quite expensive. The vet worms them when they go for their annual vaccinations ad check ups,but in between times, I try to worm them at two m onto intervals - perhaps one month in the summer, they hunt and one can’t prevent it. They tend not to use Drontal here, but another kind which is very efficient. But the tablets are expensive 8 eu each, so I do sometimes buy bob Martins from Amazon which are much cheaper and which resemble Drontal in every way other than the printed label. Despite dire warnings about using them, they do seem to work.

They are fine apart from the above, but really don’t like the high heat in summer.
