Hey guys from sunny/ rainy portsmouth.

I need some much needed advice that i have spent ages looking for and sadly arent getting anywhere so thought who better to ask but the people out there ;)

Myself 38 and a social worker here in Uk my husband who works on the oil rigs and my 2 children are desperate to move to spain.

we came out last year and obtained our NIE numbers and we have a house in the uk we are planning to sell to help support us while we get started out there.

We are planning to rent for the first year but am very confused with visa situ and this 90 day rule if we havent got residency!

Any advice would be much appreciated or if some knowledge on how best to get a CV to some people/places :)

Thank you guys

Hi Stacie,

I'm assuming that you are UK passport holders for the advice I'm giving.......

Since Brexit anyone who wants to live and work in Spain must have a visa.

To get a visa to be able to move and work here you will need to secure a work position first while you are still living in the UK. If you are fortunate enough to get work then the prospective employer will need to apply for a work visa on your behalf from the Spanish consulate in the UK, having to prove that the position had been offered to an EU citizens and no applicant was suitable.

All work in Spain must be offered to an EU citizen first!

To gain a visa for all your family you will need to prove that you will have a reliable income to satisfy the authorities. You will also need full healthcare for each family member paid for a full year.

Of course you will need to enquire about schools which I can't advise on.

You can't just move to Spain and apply for residency without some sort of visa. You can however have a job search holiday here an spread your CV around to the relevant companies.

You are allowed 90 days within 180 days twice per rolling year.

Here is a 90 in 180 day calculator:

Hi,

If you get your visa and it results in residency you can apply for your husband to join you as a family member. You will both need to apply for the TIE residency card.

You will both become tax residents after 183 days of residency and will need to declare all your worldwide income and wealth including bank and pension accounts and any property you own etc.

If you open a non resident bank account you will be paying exorbitant annual fees. Most posters advice you to open an online Banking account such as Wise Online Banking. They will give you an eu IBAN number which is sufficient for direct debit etc, I have been with them for many years without any problems.

Please ask if I can help further.

Stacie, I'm a retired social worker. Your UK qualification will count for nothing here in Spain, they were equalised when the UK was in the EU, but now its Brexited, it will no longer be recognised in Spain. Buuuut.......... The government of Gibraltar did, occasionally, employ social workers from England. I don't know if they still do, because the last time I applied, everything was on hold because of Brexit. But it might be worth having a look at their website.

Thank you so much thats interesting! I had read if you had a degree there was a certain visa you could get etc!

Is there a visa i could get to come over and not work but look for work while im out there and then apply for a working visa then??

we are going to the “ place in the sun” exhibition beginning of june hoping to get some help and knowledge.

The dream seems to be getting harder and harder to achieve.

Stace :)

No visa for degrees, and the EU and Spain, is full of graduates who still have freedom of movement which we lost because of Brexit. Do you or your husband have recent Irish ancestry? If you qualify for an Irish passport you keep those rights as an EU citizen.

I'd try the Gibraltar Gov website, then. See if they are still recruiting. If not, it's probably easier for you to move to Australia as a social worker than it will be for you to move to Spain. Brexit has screwed up so many people's lives and life chances.

If your husband is away on oil rigs, I suggest it may be sensible for you to make enquiries as to the exact position and visas to which you may, or may not, be entitled. You will also have to prove the required income levels, which are currently, I believe, but stand to be corrected, of some 27K for the first member of your family and some 6K for each other member, including dependent children. And private health cover, fully compliant with government requirements, for each member, paid in full in advance for a year.
