Hi,

We will be moving over to Spain in about 6 weeks and we would like advice on the best way to transport 2 small dogs without driving them.

The Ferry's are booked up and we think the car journey to Alicante would be too stressful for our older dog who is 13 years old..

Also do the dogs need to be given a rabies jab and have a vets health check fit to travel certificate. ?..They are both up to date with vaccinations and chipped

Many thanks

Gary

Hi Gary,
If you drive down yourself you can take your time and stop where and when you want but most importantly your dogs will be with you. If they come across by ferry they will be in a kennel on board and be stuck in a cage in the back of some stranger's van and I wouldn't even consider putting either of my dogs in the hold of an aircraft.
I'm not up to date with the rules and regs since Brexit but hopefully someone else on the forum can help.

Hi Gary,

I don't know whether it still applies, but initially after Brexit the UK Government advised that you needed to start the process for transporting dogs, cats and ferrets to the EU 4 months' in advance of your travel date.  The detailed requirements can be found at this link - I'd recommend reading each of the links embedded in the text as well, for further important information, and speaking to your vet in the UK as soon as possible:

Kind regards,

Kim

Hi we just came over to Alicante with our dog. As he was under 6 kilos he was in the cabin with us. We flew heathrow to Madrid and then caught the Ave train to Alicante. All went very smoothly.  He had to have an animal  health  certificate, issued  no more  than 10 days before travelling.

Hi, yes they need rabies jabs and have to be microchipped. We flew with Iberia but you need to book the flight for yourselves and the dogs direct with Iberia and make sure they send confirmation by email stating  the dogs are booked on the flight.
