Hi, does anyone know if a English medical certificate off your doctor is ok to show local police that you are exempt from wearing a face mask in Benidorm.

I don't think the Local Police in Benidorm will accept any excuses. Any letter would need to be translated into Spanish and stamped by a notary. Do the right thing and abide by the rules.

Doubtful if for no other reason than it's not in Spanish!

You could I suppose get a translation but unless it were notorised it would carry only as much weight as a policeman questioning you chose to give it, and you can expect to be question not to mention get disapproving looks from passers by.

Frankly I think if I had breathing problems which genuinely precluded the wearing of a mask I'd probably hink twice about coming to Spain in the first place, but that's just me.

I have medical reasons that I cannot wear a face mask , but I still choose to wear one at all times in public. Not only does it act as protection against infection, but I don't want to cause any distress to others. To be honest, I now see wearing a mask in public as the norm. Saying that , that is my choice and I can wear a mask for a short while when needed, but I do appreciate that for some that may not be an option.

Thanks Steve will look into getting it translated and stamped. Will probably contact the Spanish consul for there advice. Would love nothing more than to be able to wear one trust me, but with my COPD it just cuts off my breathing.

I hope you've got good travel insurance.

Please don't say that you're planning to travel without it!

Yes I have annual travel insurance for my condition which costs a lot more but it's needed. This holiday was booked in February & my insurance is from December 2019/2020 so well covered. My partner won't cancel the holiday or change the date, so trying sort it out.

Hi Jam - unfortunately, wearing a mask is not only to protect yourself, but also others in close proximity to you. If you are flying over, then you will have to wear a mask on the plane, as this is mandatory for everybody. I wouldn’t feel comfortable at all sitting next to somebody who is not wearing one, regardless of any medical condition they may have. Unless the airline can give you a space well away from other passengers, I doubt that you will be allowed on board, (if not wearing a mask)?

I've just had the afternoon in the old town and Police are out and about actively enforcing the mask rules. So beware...You have been warned.
