I'm getting conflicting messages about brining my own furniture and some tools into Spain by private van. Some people say I have to pay 30% of what the stuff is worth or nothing. Anybody made the trip recently with a van?

We drove down a few weeks ago in a lwb sprinter loaded with furniture tools etc. Drove straight through the border, no stopping, no checks, didn't even gave to slow down. In fact we have never been stopped but we may have been lucky
Hi Barry
Depends on whether you are resident or not. Likewise if Davidsnoxell is too. If resident you have 12 months exemption to bring personal goods over as change of primary residence, after that you could be charged import duties. If non resident there is only a tax free allowance of €430 value of goods(per person) if travelling by sea or flying but by road(through France) its only €300 value. We are non residents and done 3 van trips prior to Brexit no problems but we have chickened out and come by car (loaded) a week ago to see how it is. They separate cars from vans so couldn't see how van fared, ie did everyone get searched or not but it still took 40mins from leaving boat to getting onto the road. I suggest you do 2 lists of goods one English, 1 in Spanish(and French if by road) with low but realistic values if you are non resident. Couriers still ask resident customers to compile lists too so not much differrence. We are coming with van next year for 1 more time as we still have some big stuff to shift.
Regards
Pauline

I think it very much depends if you are coming overland through France or by ferry direct to Spain

Think you could be right though EU rules are same for both. When I compare people's experiences for French border and Spanish border I have to admit it seems French border agents more lax at checking van loads but then most people sharing experiences don't always admit to being residents in their story either, which creates a differrent experience, but my hubby will not tolerate driving through France unfortunately.

Are you resident or non resident? We're you not stopped by customs checking paperwork on the French border at all?

Thanks very much for the info. We took residency in December last year and we have just got our TIE cards. So going by the information you have given I should be OK to bring my personal goods into Spain with financial penalty.?

We are residents, the French only took a brief glance at our antigen test result before we got on the train at Ashford. Eurotunnel looked at all of the paperwork and when I spoke to the UK Passport control they told me it was all linked so they did not need to look at anything other than passports. At no point after Ashford did anyone stop us or ask for any paperwork, not even at the French/Spanish border at Le Perthus
