Does anyone have an idea about the equivalent of the AA or RAC in Spain, as a woman driver who drives distances this would be helpful.

In Spain, there's the Real Automóvil Club de España (RACE), which is a club offering various services, including insurance, roadside assistance, and travel-related benefits.

There is, as shown, but your car insurance will cover breakdown and recovery as part of the policy. Their system is really good.

The level of cover offered with car insurance will obviously vary from company to company, and BTW it's an optional addon not a definitive part of a basic policy, but rarely if ever will it come even close to what you would get with RACE, that organisation would have no reason to exist if it did!

Check with your insurer to see exactly what their cover provides then compare with RACE. Make an informed choice and avoid unpleasant surprises if the day ever comes when you need it.

It has always been included in my policies, never an optional extra. I also have to say from my experience the have been far better than the AA and RAC cover. Come out quickly and if your car isn't repairable towed to a garage of your choice. The other good thing is that if they recover it and your car is off the road for 7 days you will be given a curtesy car through your insurance.

I've been with 3 insurance companies in my time here, Mapfre, Liberty and Linea Directa. OK, they've probably tried to upgrade the cost but all of them have included roadside recovery and courtesy car if necessary. Probably an extra but has been included. I've had to use them twice, once for a puncture (they don't give spares anymore and the side wall was damaged) and once for a flat battery. They were out within 20 minutes on each occasion and got me on my way.

They also cover me in UK although not with a courtesy car but they do in EU countries.

If you are in a uk reg car I always used Saga 90 day European breakdown cover with a very competitive insurance policy. Here in Spain I use Linea directa ( direct line) free breakdown coverage with my policy. Also cheaper than the uk .
