Hi,

I have two OAP friends, still in reasonable health... taking no medication, who are a bit anxious about moving to Benidorm.  I believe that as long as he, the Brit 71, registers to reside in Spain before December 31st he will be covered with the Spanish health system and wouldn't need private health insurance that he couldn't afford. His wife is lrish and the same age. As a member of the EU would she be eligible for free medical care if she registered to live there?  They would like to buy a mobile home over there to sit in the sun, can afford the ground rent etc, reasonable pensions above the minimum required but their worry is if either ended up in hospital would they be hit with massive bills they couldn't afford?  They know they'd have to pay for prescription costs if they needed medicine, it's the dreaded hospital bill they worry about.  Sorry for being long winded. Any advice welcomed. Thank you.

I understand that Eire operate a similar scheme to the UK S1 form, so there should be no problem in her arranging to transfer her health cover from Eire to Spain - provided of course that she's paid into the Eire social security system. When she speaks to the relevant authority in Eire, she should also ask if her husband could also be covered.

The husband could certainly get an S1 and transfer to the Spanish health system, but nobody as yet knows what will happen to our health entitlement after the end of this year. It's all in the hands of the Brexit joint committee, and there's no way of telling what will happen.

If he is entitled to UK pension then he could apply for healthcare covered by the S1 form which would also cover any dependants. This would have to be done by Dec 31st 2020.

I am a pensioner fully resident in Spain and I don't have to pay any prescription costs or any other  medical fees. If you havd S1 cover you will not have hospital bills. I had 9 months hospital treatment last year and didn't get a bill.

Think twice about living on a caravan site as it's as expensive as renting an apartment.

Please do your homework as to the legalities of living in Spain such as healthcare and getting your NIE number and signing on the foreigners register within the first 90 days of living in Spain etc etc
