Hello, my friend is moving from lreland to live in Benidorm next April.

To book a doctor's appointment in lreland it costs €60 plus prescription costs. Anyone know what it costs for an appointment over there?

Many thanks.

If your friend isn't old enough to transfer state health cover to Spain, one year's full-cover private health insurance, pre-paid for one year, will be required to become resident here, as well as complying with proof of sufficient finances. With PHI, prescriptions have to be paid for, but prices are generally cheaper than in the UK.

Hi, thanks for replying. He's an OAP living in Wexford Town. Generally in good health, that's all l know. Not seen him in years, we keep in touch through the phone.

Regards.

OK. If your friend receives the DWP state retirement pension, then he can contact DWP and get a form S1 which will let him transfer from the NHS to Spanish health service.

Initially he'll only pay 10% of prescription charges, and once he's done his first tax return and that's filtered through the system, he will probably get prescriptions free.

He will still need to provide proof of sufficient finances.

Seems the Spanish authorities in Alicante think we have already left the EU .

A friend who was a resident up until 2 years ago but has now bought again here  went to start to  get  the residentia ball rolling , took all his paperwork etc ,on his first visit he jumped thro all the usual hoops and was then told he needed a minimum of 7k per person in his bank account , signed up for a further appointment on Monday and duly transferred funds from UK to Spain .

In again on Monday , saw the same official and duly showed the  funds + had been bought over and were in the bank , not good enough said the clerk the monies have to be in the bank for a minimum of 3mths before his applications can be considered …!!!

As he told me he was lucky not to thrown out on his ear ,as he is not a happy bunny …!!!

If medical costs are a problem for your "friend", it is only €25 in France for a office visit - paid up front and reimbursed thru insurance or the 70% by the state.
