Paying foe repeat prescriptions

You can visit a ‘GP’ as recommended by your insurance company, who can issue prescriptions for you. You will have to pay the full price of the medicine either through your PHI or even if you are able to purchase over the counter.

You can join the Spanish Healthcare system via the Convenio Especial. However, you will still pay full price for your prescription medicines.

Benefit - dependent on your age and/or how much you are paying for PHI  it could be cheaper

To join the Convenio Especial you have to have been officially registered as a resident in Spain for a minimum of one year. The current cost is 60€ per month for those who are under 65 and 157€ per month if you are over 65. If your application is accepted you will be entitled to the same public healthcare as Spanish residents. However, as tebo53 has already mentioned, you will have to meet the full cost of all prescriptions except for specialist medication that is only dispensed at a hospital Pharmacy.

Thanks John. That's brilliant. Will this be in addition to private health care or instead? At the moment, I am required to have private health insurance as part of the criterion for NLV

In stead of Private Medical insurance. The Convenio Especial also includes pre-existing conditions unlike private medical insurance.
