Black leather wallet containing cash, debit card and credit card.Reported to hotel Benidorm East and could not give me proof of reporting loss and had no lost property forms for insurance claim and said call police. Not good customer service. Wallet lost in hotel and credit card was used to try and get money but was refused by bank. Cards stopped as soon as I discovered loss and reported in hotel.

You have probably been a victim of the local pickpockets, they prowl the hotels, bars and even around the supermarkets!!

Definitely report it to the local police. You will need to take an interpreter.

I dropped wallet in hotel and just needed proof of reporting to hotel. Hotel has no lost property department or forms to claim from insurance. But hotel manager was adamant that he would give me no proof of reporting item. Said he would have to ask his accountants about this!!

Reporting the loss to hotel staff and obtaining proof will not be acceptable for insurance purposes. You need to do as the hotel has advised, report the loss to the police who will provide you with a report that will satisfy your insurance company. It is the National Police who deal with this and you will need an appointment. If you are not fluent in Spanish you will have to take an interpreter with you. To save time with the police it is best practice to write out a full statement, in Spanish ,and listing all contents of the wallet.  The National Police Station is located at:

C/ Apolo XI, 36. Benidorm Provinz Alicante 3500. Telephone: 96 683 19 30

My experience was similar when I lost my phone (I didn't actually lose it, it broke off the holder and went into the canal when I was out cycling).

It was possible to report it online (I'm in Orihuela Costa) but I then needed to go to the national police station in Orihuela city to get them to print and sign/stamp the form.

Wherever you lost your wallet, if you're going  to claim on insurance you'll need the reference number as John suggests. Whatever the hotel gives you will be irrelevant.
