Hi

We are looking to move over to Spain sometime in November and need advice regarding using the Ferry..

Best port to sail from and to ?

When do the ferries stop operating ?

How long is the journey?

How far is the drive from Bilbao or Santander to Alicante ?

Are pets allowed on Ferries ?.

Thanks

When you say "Move over" is that permanently?

We used to use the ferry from Portsmouth to Bilbao and the journey to Spain took a day and half.

I think the journey from Bilbao to Alicante is about 800 km and if you drive direct will take about 8 hours. (I always incorporate a stopover in my journey)

I don't know when the ferry stops but I would imagine it would be on their website. Have you acquired your Visa for the move?

Then I wish you all the best for your future. We retired to Benidorm 7 years ago and never looked back. The paperwork etc to get you fully settled will test your patience but stay calm!!

I think it would be an idea to look at the Brittany Ferries website. Depending on what pet you have, and how large, it may have to be in a kennel. There are limited pet friendly cabins on some routes but these get booked up months in advance.

I used to think that the Bay of Biscay was a permanent maelstrom but I have found this article which puts it more into perspective but obviously ferries are smaller than cruise ships so may suffer more if there is a storm.

My personal choice was to drive down through the tunnel, booking pet friendly accommodation as we went.

We’ve recently done Plymouth - Santander and will be returning on Monday same route. From north of England it was a straight forward run down with plenty of stops to stretch/swap drivers. Pleasant ferry crossing overnight and we had a straight run down to guardamar it took about 10 hours with stretch/coffees/toilet stops. Loads of places to stop only thing to watch for is not all petrol stations are 24hours if you are travelling late. . Lots of info on Brittany website and I messaged them with queries via FB messenger. Hope that helps. If you want discount on your crossing happy to share our code: S08AXB. (0=zero)
